    MBA Mid 2011, Parallels 7

I'm having the exact same issue... MBA freezes when resumed from sleep mode when I run a VM in Parallels.

    My findings:
    - This happens only when running on battery.
    - This happens only when the MBA goes to sleep for more than few minutes. Just a quick sleep and awake doesn't show the issue.

Hope the Parallels folks are going to fix this soon... I've bought a Mac because I didn't want to fight with such basic problems...

    Same Problem

I've been seeing the same problem. Just of curiosity when you look at the OSX crashlog does it say something about a problem with a graphics driver? In my case I get something about the nvidia driver. Maybe it will help the powers that be diagnose?

    Fix for crash!

    Hey all,
I have a macbook pro 15 mid 2010 with NVIDIA 330M. It's been crashing about once a day recently. I noticed that my machine was crashing even when sleep wasn't involved. My MBP can automatically switch between Intel integrated graphics and the Nvidia discrete graphics. Turning off this features stopped the crashing.

    To turn off:
    1: Open System Preferences
    2: Click Energy Saver
    3: Uncheck Automatic graphics switching

This will chew through your battery quicker but I suspect many people using parallels use their laptops as desktop replacements.

I'm not sure if this is an apple driver problem or parallels bug but hope it helps everyone else.

Turning off automatic graphics switching didn't help. Any other ideas?

    Greetings from Parallels Support,

We really appreciate your feedback on this issue. All of your comments were taken into consideration when we escalated this issue to our Engineering team. The investigation has been in progress for a while already and is still not finished.

As you may already know, the only workaround available so far is to suspend the VM before hibernating the Mac.

We will be certain to update this thread once we are updated with more information. To stay up to date, please make sure to subscribe to this forum thread by clicking on 'Subscribe to this Thread' at the bottom of the page under Thread Tools.

    Bump

    Same issue here.

    Early 2011 MBP.

If I close the lid with a VM running and my machine goes into hibernation mode, I get that nasty firmware beep on wake, and I have to forcibly restart.

    Very. Annoying.

Having just run into this problem too, I'm now looking forward to seeing the aforementioned update. Glad to know that it has already been acknowledged as an issue.

I received a reply form Parallels support that may be relevant to this problem. The problem is not confined to MAC Book AIR as in the headline of the KB article in my experience. My system is MacBook Pro that has similar problems to the forum discussion. The reply is the first I have read advocating manually choosing VM suspend, before entering a sleep mode on the Mac.
As far as I can tell on my system this overcomes the problem of loosing keyboard and mouse control in the VM, after waking the Mac, for me. I have set my MacBook to never automatically sleep. The balance of inconvenience for me may not be worth this approach in the long term.

Reply from Parallels support to my initial problem report:

With regards to the issue, I understand that your Virtual machine crashes when mac is awake from the sleep mode.

It is always recommended to suspend the Virtual Machine and then put your Mac to sleep mode.

However you can refer to the below URL :

    http://kb.parallels.com/113612

    Awaiting for the response.

    Thanks for choosing Parallels !!

Unfortunately closing applications before I shut my laptop, or having to manually go into sleep mode, is really not a solution, and while I've been happy with parallels overall this continues to be an issue 8 months after I started having problems. It may be time to try a different VM application. I've avoided this as it takes time (and space) to set up another working environment, but this is killing one of the main reasons I bought a laptop like the MBA.

Agreed, the Parallels statement offers no more than a tedious work-around.
I would not hold my breath waiting for a resolution from Parallels. Either I learn to live with the workaround, or abandon Parallels.
I have used Oracle VirtualBox (Vbox), (on the same MacBook that I have Parallels), for the last three years and have never had this problem, or any other major problem with VBox.
The main downside of VBox is that integration with the Host OSX is not as seamless as Parallels. The rich features of parallels; for example "pause, suspend, resume the VM" are not available in Vbox:)
No VM is perfect they all require some compromise.

Seems like it has been fixed in latest Parallel 7 release. It has been a week since I am able to close the MBA lid without suspending WinXP VM first and resume normally. :)

Sorry about the last post :) Unfortunately build 7.0.15094 is what I've been using and has been freezing up on me almost daily. I have given VirtualBox a try, so far no freeze (4 days), but it does seem a little slower than Parallels, but I can live with that if it keeps may machine from having to be power cycled.
