So I just downloaded Parallels 7 for Mac from their online store/download site and have tried to install, but the install seems to hang with the message "Waiting for other installations to complete..." It's been this way for four hours.

I cannot submit a support ticket because I cannot find the relevant key until the software is installed, which I can't do because the installer is hanging.

Anyone seen this before and know a way around it. I don't want to start swearing but I'm getting close.

is it normal that no one of the developers answers this question?

Seems like there is another instance of Apple's Installer running. Open Activity Monitor and quit all instances of "Installer" and restart the installation.

It is sad that the Parallels team does not monitor their own forums. Hopefully he at least got some support by contacting them directly.

    Anyway I found a solution

Looking at similar problems in the Apple blogs, I saw that it affects not only Parallels but more the installers themselves and… I simply closed any application and restarted with ONLY the installer and… it worked!

Probably Apple is not less deaf than Parallels (by how many years I complain that the 'Previous recipient' of Mail refuse to delete definitively the … deleted addresses? And Address Book replacing stubborn the already deleted names on a card belonging to a 'company'? Very annoying both, the software and the Apple Support behaviour!)

It is not an issue or bug - it means you have started other installation of any other Mac application (e.g. Firefox, iLife, Office etc) and it is still in progress.
And you need to understand that Parallels do minitor forum, but it is not official support channel and you can't expect immediate answer here. for immediate answer open support ticket at www.parallels.com/support/

As long as you (and - much more - Apple developers!) will NOT accept that it's not the case (means: "NO, NO OTHER INSTALLATION of any other Mac application was (es… etc.) was started and still in progress) we will not face the reality and therefore approach the problem, hopefully to solve it.
I believe strongly that this BUG is NOT a Parallel installer one (the installer itself is not made by you, isn't it?) but an Apple Installer one: AT LEAST it would be highly appreciated that the installer would identify WHICH other 'installation' should be in progress in its opinion!
Anyway, restarting in Lion restarts ANY open application, installers included and, strange as it can be, 'suddenly' there is no more other 'installations in progress' (beside, CORRECTLY and as expected, the Parallel's one!), sign, EVIDENCE that it was a wrong information, refreshed, by the restart, a hanging file rebuilt buy it, so… my advice stays: "Give up searching which application, the bloody hell, is 'still in progress' and stop wasting time: restart and it was!"
