Please someone tell me what's going on.

Sometimes I log on and my external drive is sitting on my imac side, missing from the windows side.

And sometimes it seems to "jump" to my windows side and disappear from the imac's desktop.

I also get this error message telling me "!Device Removal: The device you removed was not properly put away etc etc".

    What is going on?!!!!!
    Thanks

    I don't think that's it

    Hi John,
I know my cables and hub are ok. I think I am not explaining my problem right, but let me try again. I actually think the answer is more along the lines of the answer you gave to the person who couldn't use the printer in the virtual machine.

Please let me give you a little background. I have Parallels 3.0 installed on my iMac OS X 10.5.5. My virtual machine is running Windows XP. The only reason I have the virtual machine is because I want to use this Windows photo management software that I like. So I want to use my current external drive (USB), the one with all my pictures, EXCLUSIVELY with the virtual machine.

Then, I want to connect other future external hard drives (FireWire maybe?), and I want those to be seen EXCLUSIVELY by the iMac side.

But how do I do this? How do I tell the computer: this hard drive is to be used with Windows and this other hard drive is to be used with iMac?

I hope this makes better sense!
    Thanks,
    Fio999

    A little more info...

The USB external drive is on my imac desktop when I turn on my computer.
If I open Windows, the drive migrates to Windows but it first gives me an error message "Device was not properly put away. All data may be lost".
    Thanks...

What you can see in Parallels Desktop - preferences _USB,
Also, I intentionally mentioned HUB, do not use it connect direct to Mac

    I'm getting closer...

    Hi John,
    I don't use a hub.

From your previous response, I see what is going on, although sometimes it seems to happen automatically without me doing anything.

So this is what I've been able to deduct:
-When I log on my external hard drive is sitting on my mac desktop.
    - I run Windows on Parallels 3.0, then run 'My Computer', and the external hard drive is not on the list.
    - The I go to Parallels, Devices, USB, and click on 'External HDD' and it takes the device out of the mac and puts it on Windows, first giving me a message/reminder that I should have use 'Finder --> Eject' first.
-Then I can use my external drive on Windows.
-When I'm done, I repeat the steps Parallels, Devices, USB, External HDD. The drive disappears from Windows and it goes back to the mac side.

This has taken hours to figure out, but in any case, my answer to you is, why doesn't the external drive behave like the printer or the scanner? The printer and the scanner (both also USB) are just available wherever I need then whenever I want them. Please explain!
    Thanks,

    Oh, got it
Problem is that USB device may only be used in one OS, either Mac or VM
Use Shared folders instead, and you will be able to access thatdrive at th same time from Mac and VM

    Please tell me how...

    John...
Please tell me how to set up the shared folders so that the ext. drive is available. This is really driving me crazy! I'm also getting ready to install a new 1TB ext. drive, so I want to set it up correctly to begin with.
    Thanks,

Tried to set up the shared folder but I still can't see content

I tried to set up the shared folder, I went to Devices -->Shared Folders. Then I browsed for the external drive and I picked it.

Went to Windows, and I can see the logo (WD) for the external drive under 'Network Drives'. The other two things under Network Drives are: Mac on '.psf' (Z:) and Network drive (Y:). When I click on these two other things, I can see the contents of my mac. However, when I click on the WD icon, I can't see what's in it. Instead I get a screen that says:

    Western Digital
    'Install Bonus Software from Google'
    'Register your product'
    'View User Guide'

When I don't use Shared Folders, but instead I just 'eject' the hard drive from the iMac and then connect it to the Windows side, I don't get this screen, and I am able to see all my files.

    Please help.

Probably screenshots for Finder, DiskUtil for that drives, and slides from Windows will be helpfull

    Did this get resolved anywhere...?
It's pretty much what is going on with my machine...
I have several drives and usb devices and all of a sudden one of them "goes missing".
This creates dramas that are compounding....
I don't follow the "sharing" business, I don't recall having to set anything else up in this fashion...

    cheers,
    Stu.

Actually, if I go to add a shared folder, I find that none of the other drives are listed and they are all performing satisfactorily....

I'm about to undertake the same external drive install/set up steps, but for Parallels 6.0/Windows 7 on Mac OS X 10.6.8. I believe that USB 2.0 is required, and not Firewire 400 or 800. Also believe the external drive must be formatted as FAT32 and not HFS+. Is this the setup you have?
    Cheers,
    Gary

Okay... I don't have a firewire option and the drive just plugged in as is and formatted to fat32... In the end I did a quick search and found how to share a drive, everything has stuck since.. (pretty much just shared everything from memory...)

I think, if I am going to feature a shared folder, I realize that none of the opposite drives are listed and that they are all performing satisfactorily.
