    hello parallels forum!

I am a mac user and have been for quite a while, i love everything about mac, except one thing, its inability to run ALOT of programs.
The sole reason i bought and installed parallels is so i could run various music making programs, such as fruity loops studio, adobe audition, and ableton.
So i installed parallels, and windows xp, no problems. i noticed when it first started up [ the blue welcome screen ] there was no sound, i didnt think anything of it.

I installed and ran Fruity Loops studio and it came up with an error saying : "couldnt create direct sound main object"
then i began to notice that there was no sound on anything.
i mean soundwise everything worked fine on my mac..
    im not sure..
ive spent alot of effort getting these programs and its pointless without any sound.
    suggestions?

    thanks alot, niko.

    No sound - no problem.

I jsut solved the same problem by going to activat sound in the `parallels device menu

    Device > Sound > Activate

Thank you for the reply, I checked the parallels device menu, and sound > activate was already checked, i unchecked it then checked it again, and still no sound :C

I bought Parallels for the same exact reason.
tried Fusion AND Parallels, and after much Buffer adjusting, etc
    I have arrived at this:

    My MIDI has to travel:
+ into my midi interface (through a wire),
+ THROUGH my mac (as data),
+ into Parallels (as data), through Parallels
    + into the Windows OS,
    + into Fruity Loops...
Then the Audio response has to...
    + leave Fruity Loops(as data),
+ go into the Windows OS, through the Windows OS,
+ back out Parallels, through Parallels,
+ into the mac OS, through the mac OS,
    + into my soundcard, and
+ out of my speakers (through a wire), where the sound finally hits my head.

    That's 11 steps.
That means that if each of those steps takes 1 ms, you will have 12 ms of latency.

And if you're actually playing the notes you're recording
(no matter what DAW you're using) 12 ms is juusst above the threshold
    of desirable.

You will get the "Press note...wait...hear note" phenomenon.
In actuality, some of those steps will take more than 1 ms,
so we're well above the 12 ms area.

I have decided (perhaps unfortunately) that I will have to buy a
Windows laptop to use Fruity Loops.
I'll just plug the audio outs from the crappy windows computer
into the inputs of my soundcard, and bluetooth any data i want to swap.

Unless anybody out there can offer any suggestions regarding TWEAKING, etc.

Try updating the sound driver in "Control Panels -> Sound & Audio Devices -> Hardware

This should be something like your computer's audio hardware type. Mine (iMac 2.66GHz DualCore) is named

    "Intel(r) 82801BA/BAM AC '97 Audio Controller"

Click "Troubleshoot" after selecting the device's name and let Windows look for a driver update. Install this update and everything should be fine - at least if your problem is like mine.

Perhaps renewing Parallel's virtual machine settings for sound before booting Windows can be useful, but for me, it definitely was the driver update.

Hope you get back your sound. (I rely on Mac for music isuues...)
