I'm not disagreeing with respect to Parallels, but there's no need to be rude to them, no matter what. He could have expressed his anger without being rude. To be frank, he comes off like a petulant child. And where did it get him? Put yourself in their shoes, would they rather please a customer who is being calm and logical, or one who is insulting them?

Just tell them you are not happy with their service and will be planning to switch to one of the alternatives; no nastiness necessary.

I work in the service industry. It's ingrained in me that the customer is always right, not right if they are polite. Right, PERIOD. And that you should bend over backwards to save a customer. And angry customer tends not to be a customer any more, and they tend to tell everyone the know about it. They company I work for would rather refund your money to keep you satisfied rather than make you walk out the door mad, and because of this policy they are a world class leader in their field.

I work for the largest computer manufacturing company in the world, and when I got Parallels 6, Parallels provided a complimentary copy for employees of this company. Apparently that's no longer the case, and it's significantly higher priced than a competing product (which also offers a significant price break as employees of this company). Even the upgrade pricing is quite a bit higher.

I'm already frustrated that my full time job requires that I use Microsoft Office, and Microsoft's cobbled version for the Mac does NOT provide the same functionality as the Windows version. To compound that frustration, I have to pay (nearly) full boat to be able to run virtualization s/w.

Sure, but like I said, you can make it very clear that you're not happy and going elsewhere with your business without being childish or rude. I've gotten a lot of concessions from service staff by being assertive and polite, while seeing other people get ignored or even escorted off the premises for being abusive.

And when people post their rude interactions with customer service staff publicly, it makes them look just as bad as the ones they criticize. If you're looking to get people to rally behind you, you have to come off as the one who's being reasonable.

Well, that sounds like a good idea but my guess is they won't include that in the "tech guarantee" when it comes time to upgrade. Plus, all the software included in that pack is worthless to me. Maybe not to you but I don't need any of it.

You have no respect for your customers ! I bought a $79 license for Parallels 6 and a couple of months later I was "Invited" to upgrade for an extra $49 fee. That is absolutely rude considering that Parallels 6 was not fully functional in Lion. Now it is absolutely broken in Mountain Lion, and all you can say is that Lion and Mountain Lion has " a lot of changes" ? Well it is ok if you are building a newer version, and you don't want to suppor the old one, many of us are developers too, and we know what it takes, but it is unacceptable to keep up buying new versions of your software every time we need to upgrade to a new version of the OS to support our own apps over Mac OS. This is absolutely no way of treating customers, and we, the developers are the ones being hit hard with your idiotic policy.

Thanks for nothing Parallels. I won't buy another version of your software, and will probably strongly disencourage any one considering so.

    Too slow Parallels. Uninstalled.

Too slow Parallels. Uninstalled. Replaced with VirtualBox, which is free, and actually running faster than Parallels did.

You snooze, you disrespect, you lose.

I laughed. The passive aggressive "Thank you for choosing parallels".

How big of an idiot am I for buying this add on product from Parallels? My out of date software is available for an entire 13 months!!!

From the Parallels webstore: "Save Time and Safeguard Your Purchase with EDS (Extended Download Service)
Securely back up your software online for two (2) years.
Now purchasing software online is more convenient than ever. Our Extended Download Service frees you from the time-consuming — but critical — chore of backing up your new software. Simply purchase EDS as part of your order. We’ll automatically store on our server a back-up copy of the software that you purchased and downloaded for two (2) years from the date of purchase. System crash? Hard disk error? No Worries! You can re-download your files anytime during your extended protection period. Your use of Extended Download Service is governed by the Digital River’s Terms and Conditions. Click here to review the Terms and Conditions."

    ----

BTW if you download the trail version it will automatically convert parallels 6 to parallels 7. It will give you 21 days of use.

PARALLELS 8 IS LIEKLY TO COME OUT BY THEN. Or at least you can delete parallels the right way.

Just adding my name to the list of people who will never buy another Parallels product because of practices like this. On the upside, it finally convinced me to give VirtualBox a try, which is great.

When I bought Parallels 6 a few months before version 7 was released, they never offered me a free upgrade to 7. Actually I was surprised I would have to pay another $50 in such a short period. Now I have this obscene offer to get 7 for $50 and a maybe I can get a free upgrade to 8 if it's released in 6 months. I don't like this company upgrade policies, I don't depend on Parallels that much it can't be replaced, and I think they are committing a big commercial mistake.

For the same $50 which Parallels is asking, you could simply switch to VMware. They're last upgrade price was $40 (little bit cheaper than Parallels). They have a free trial download. Since I very rarely use Windows (like 1-2 times a year), maybe I'll give it a try.

Already upgraded to Mountain Lion with Parallels 6

I upgraded to Mountain Lion and now my Parallels 6 don't work. I will gladly pay for Parallels 7 to make it work without installing windows again. Will it work automaticly if I upgrade to Parallels 7?

Yes, it will. Upgrading doesn't require Windows re-installation.

I'm surprised this thread I opened has turned into this, but not displeased.

The issue I have with Parallels is their claim that ML is a drastic upgrade. The only reason it won't work with Mountain Lion is due to the fact that ML doesn't support 32 Bit extensions, which frankly has been written on the wall for over 2 years. Parallels has continued to update the version 6 client up to a few months ago but failed to provide the key updates they knew would make it compatible with Mountain Lion. Their support page even indicated it would be supported up to a few days ago. Someone up top thought this would be a good way to increase revenue. Nothing more. This 64 Bit issue is not a surprise for Parallels. They knew this was coming when Lion was released and they could have released 64 bit kexts at that time but refused to. 2 YEARS they has to address this.

For those who are looking for alternatives, I would suggest you first check out VirtualBox. It's open source and completely free. All upgrades are free. All SUPPORT is also free. It will work for pretty much any day to day work in Windows, and it will convert your existing Parallels machine without much fuss.

For those requiring better paid support for corporate environments, check out VMWare Fusion. The full cost of that software is the same as the Upgrade price of Parallels and they support their code longer. It will also convert your machine without fuss.

    Shame

    :(

I was very happy with Parallels Desktop and had no reason to switch whatsoever, but this is not acceptable at all. Forcing users to spend $50 after a $20 OS upgrade, on a product that is two years old, feels like extortion, plain and simple.

I am now stuck on a busy Saturday with a Mountain Lion installation and a Windows VM that I can't access. I will install the trial version of VMWare Fusion and import my VM there; if Parallels is still sticking to its guns when the trial runs out, I'll buy Fusion and never purchase a Parallels product again.

I would have paid a small sum for an easy upgrade. However parallels tends to push $50 upgrades all the time. I may have to upgrade to get out of trouble - so you may get my money this time. But I will spend a lot of energy not doing business with you again. Enough ---- time to find a better company to be on my team. Cheers!

    Nope. Parallels, never again.

It's a shame. The Parallels 7 version was never worth the upgrade. I had 5 and 6 before it, upgrading as soon as they came out, but Parallels 7 didn't made my eyes shine.

Unfortunately, I won't upgrade to Parallels 7 paying full price. I never received an option to upgrade for free and I will never recommend Parallels again (I did at least 7 recommendations that I knew people brought).
