I get this error trying to install Windows 7 in our new virtual machine:

    Unable to connect CD/DVD 1.

A file or device required for the operation of the CD/DVD 1 does not exist or is used by another process, or you have no permission to access it. The virtual machine will continue running. but the device will be disconnected.

Any idea how to get it to recognize the DVD drive?

    Easy to fix.

Start by saying continue without DVD and run though all the config and setup.

Once the Virtual Machine starts to try and boot from the DVD, then you can insert it to the drive. As I figured out, it is unable to pass the control of the DVD over to the Virtual Machine, but with it loaded and attempting to boot it will do so just fine. Found the info in this forum.
