I am trying to upgrade an XP VM to Windows 8 Pro. I've gotten past the download, etc. I believe I rebooted twice. Now I am just stuck on the black screen with the blue tile "logo" and the "whirling" dots. It has been sitting there for more than 8 hours and I can't tell if it is doing anything at all. I have tried the install multiple times with the same result. Do I just need to keep waiting and it will eventually finish or is something wrong with the install?

I am not sure about the process going from XP to Windows 8. I just upgraded my machine from Windows 7 however and it took a minute or two if that.

The upgrade usually takes up to one hour to complete depending on the resources you allocated for the VM. If it's taking 8 hours, most probably it just hangs. Try to stop the VM and see if it starts. If not, probably you need to re-run the upgrade.
