Since the upgrade to Mavericks and PD9 I have problems with the file access from the Windows guest system to files located in the host system folders (user folder as well as the shared folder). This occurs with Win 7 and Win 8.1. A temporary downgrade to PD8 did not help. I even re-installed everything (OS X and Win) without success.

My problem is that the Windows Explorer sometimes takes several minutes to open a folder located in the host system. The respective settings should be set correctly and I can see the folders/shares in "My Computer".

Furthermore, it occurs frequently but not always reproducibly that I cannot open files with their associated programs, e.g. with MS Office applications (Office 2007 as well as 2013) or ACDSee. The program does not respond anymore when trying it. Occassionally the error message "An error occurred in sending the command to the application." appears with Word.

The only work around is to copy the concerning file or the complete folder content within OS X, e.g. from "Documents" to "Desktop", delete the original files and move the copy back to its origin. Then the folder is accessible again for the Windows Explorer and the file can be opened again. However, after few restarts of the virtual machine the problem reappears. I have already checked and fixed all permissions.

Does anybody have the same problem and/or know how to fix it?

Update: it seems as if the problem appears as soon as there is a German umlaut (e.g. ä or ü) in a file name in any file within a folder located on the Mavericks host system. There is no issue when the file is in a folder in the Windows guest system nor within Mavericks itself. If the file with the umlaut is newly placed in a folder, the error occurs after restart of Mavericks, not the guest system. I did not notice this issue with OS X 10.8.

    Hi !
I experience the same problem with the same configuration (Mavericks, Win 7, Parallels Desktop 9). I have many files on the Mac whose names have accented characters (French), so if this is the cause, it's a very serious problem.
Has somebody contacted the support at Parallels ?

Since I have renamed all files containing special characters everything works fine.
I have not contacted the Parallel's support so far. I was hoping they monitor this forum.

    Hello !
I came to the same conclusion as you i.e. the problem lies with the use of diacritics (accents, dots, curls, ...). I filed an assistance ticket with Parallels support and I hope they will fix this bug in a future release.
As you suggested, a practical workaround is to remove all diacritics. Another one would be to convince the whole world to speak only plain english ...
