    Hello,

Since quite a while I have Parallel Tools Installation problems, similar to those on Ubuntu 13.10 before, on Mageia 4.

I DO get the small yellow Parallels Tools Intall Gui, asking for my (root) password! I type that in, Parallels Tools starts installing (each time I try) until:

    'Uknown error occurred'.

When I try to install via Terminal and run under root: './install' it soon claims it's missing components:
    - GCC
    - make
    - kernel sources
    Install those first!

When I go to the Mageia control center to install those Mageia components I get several different versions of them all.
On top of that if I DO choose to install for example 'make', I get the message the 'Core Release' repository has to be inserted....
In the list the 'Core Release' repository IS active but CD ROM is the very first in the list.....

How can I install Parallels Tools in Mageia 4 without all this hassle?

    Please advise....
(Yes I DO have the latest Parallels 9; updated a few days ago even, on my iMac with OSX Mavericks.)

    Kind regards,

    Gaytan

Ok, I managed to install the latest kernel sources including gcc and make.

Now, when running ./install via terminal with root rights the Parallels Tools installation DOES start ... but breaking off with error to go to /var/log/parallels-tools-install.log:

Could please something be done about making Parallels Tools installation in Mageia 4 as 'running smoothly' as in Ubuntu 13.10 lately? Mageia 4 is a very user friendly environment to work with!

    Kernel version Mageia 4: 3.12.13 (uname -r)

    Thank you!

    Kind regards,

    Gaytan

    Hi Gaytan,

Mageina 4 is currently not a Supported Guest Operating Systems under Parallels Desktop 9 for Mac.

Please refer this link for a list of Supported Guest Operating Systems: http://www.parallels.com/products/desktop/#tab4

    Thanks,

    I don't understand your reply!

This, because, when I had Mageia installed, I could click in the Parallels menu: "Install Parallels Tools", which I did.
If Parallels Tools would NOT be supported for Mageia, I would have expected the option in the menu to be 'grey', meaning 'inactive'!

Parallels Tools Installation GUI started up in Mageia, asked for password and even started installing!
So even if Mageia is NOT supported, why does Parallels Tools ACCEPT BEING INSTALLED IN MAGEIA IN THE FIRST PLACE??
    I am puzzled here.....

I would love to get Mageia going really!
    It's as user-friendly as Ubuntu!

Hope you can help me; can I do something via the command line maybe?
    Please help!

    Kind regards,

    Gaytan

Gaetan - Don't take that list of supported systems too literally. It would imply that Parallels doesn't support any version of Linux released in the last two years, and that simply is not the case. I installed Parallels Tools on Mageia 4 using the patch posted here:

    http://forum.parallels.com/showthread.php?294092-Fix-Patch-for-Parallel-Tools-9-0-23350-to-support-Linux-Kernel-3-12-(Ubuntu-14-04)

Also, the guest tools in the latest Parallels update (9.0.24217) installed OK over that patched version. It has been working fine for me.

    No problem...

I had seen that post before indeed but I don't know what to do with the code he pasted...
Do you have to include that into a text editor and call it 'patch.sh'? Or some other extension?
    I'm a newbie to this...

Just tried installing the latest Parallels tools Installation (from a few days ago) but without doing 'that patch' these Parallels tools don't seem to install either...
    Same error message....
I find it quite frustrating really....

You don't need that patch any longer. The last two versions (9.0.24217.979618 and 9.0.24229.991745) installed fine on Mageia 4. Looking back at your earlier log, it looks like you may have installed the wrong compiler version. Do a fresh install of Mageia, but don't select the Development package set during installation and don't install any development tools yourself. Before installing Parallels Tools, go into Mageia Control Centre -> Software Management and click "Configure Media Sources for Install and Update". Uncheck "Enabled" for the two CD-ROM sources, then click the "Add" button to download mirror list and configure online sources. The default selections for "Enabled" and "Updates" should be OK. Once that is finished, install Parallels Tools as normal. The install script will download the necessary build tools, kernel sources, etc., from the Mageia repos. The only glitch I noticed is that clicking the "Reboot" button in the final screen of the installer doesn't reboot the system. I had to reboot it myself.

    Wow! Nice!

I did exactly as you mentioned! Miracle!
    It works very well now!

Nice to know that Parallels DID some work on the Parallels tools!
    Works real nice!

    But ...

Again having the 'blue' screen flickering when moving my mouse upwards top left of the screen; background disappearing and some 'dark blue' screen 'taking over'...
I have read some solution for that in the past; had it too with Ubuntu 13.10 and Linux Mint; cannot remember what it was though....
    Got any clue?

For the rest it works quite well!

Extra question: tried to install 'Open Mandriva' this morning; both the 2013 as well as the 2014 beta1 versions but they both hang on black screen 'localhost login:' Pity though... I had thought they would install as well as Mageia....
Any clue(s) for Open Mandriva as well?

Thanks for your extensive reply / help! I appreciate it real much!
    Thanks again!

    Kind regards,

    Ed!

No clue about your flicker. As for OpenMandriva, I never could get 2013 to install, so I went to VirtualBox. I did get 2014 Beta 1 to install in Parallels 9, but it was kind of a pain:

When you get dumped at the login prompt, it's because X doesn't start because a couple of dependent modules don't get loaded. At the prompt, log in as root (no password required). After logging in, create an xorg.conf file:

    Code:
    # vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf

    The file should contain:

    Code:
    Section "Module"
            Load "int10"
            Load "fb"
    EndSection

These changes will propagate to the xorg.conf file in the installed system. They are necessary for the installed system to start up.

After saving the xorg.conf file, go to multi-user mode:

    Code:
    # systemctl isolate multi-user.target

    Then go to graphical mode:

    Code:
    # systemctl isolate graphical.target

You should then be greeted by the first screen of the installer.

After installation is complete and you reboot into your OpenMandriva VM, *take a snapshot* so you can return to a clean version if necessary.

The Parallels Tools installation fails unless you install some prerequisites first:

    Code:
    # urpmi --no-verify-rpm gcc make kernel-nrjQL-desktop-devel-latest dkms dkms-minimal patch

The --no-verify-rpm is used because many packages are unsigned or have bad signatures. That may be why the Parallels Tools script fails, but I'm not sure.

*Take another snapshot* here. In case something goes wrong with Parallels Tools installation, you can roll back to this point.

Now install Parallels Tools and reboot. If the installation fails for some reason, look at /var/log/parallels-tools-install.log to see if a required package failed to to install.

I should add that it is possible to install OM 2013 on VirtualBox and convert it to Parallels. When you first boot after the conversion, you will be left at the login prompt as before. Log in as root with the password set in the VM. Back up the VirtualBox-generated version of /etc/X11/xorg.conf and replace it with the content described above. Then instead of running systemctl commands, just run "reboot". The Parallels Tools prerequisites should have been installed for the VirtualBox Guest Additions, so you should be able to just run the tools installer after logging in to the converted system.

Thanks for your extensive reply and indications but .... it's way simpler! Found this back again ( had used it before for Ubuntu Gnome blue screen flickering ):

    http://forum.parallels.com/showthre...-and-Cinnamon-blue-screen-glitch-issues/page2

Blue screen glitches in Cinnamon, Gnome in Linux!!

    quote

Try adding the following line to your /etc/environment file and reboot:

    CLUTTER_PAINT=disable-clipped-redraws:disable-culling

    THIS .. does the works!
Not difficult and .. solved my problems!

Thanks again for helping me out!
    ;-)
