Make status bar visible on Mac desktop when in coherence mode

I have some devices, such as CD/DVDs, PDAs etc, that I don't want to automatically connect in Windows, I prefer to manually connect them using the status bar. However if I'm in coherence mode, I have to switch to OS Window or Fullscreen before the status bar is visible. It would help if the status bar was visible in the Dock, or a Dashboard Widget or something.

 

This functionality is accessible via the "Devices" menu.
