    Hello, I believe I found a USB bug in Parallels 11.

    I have 2012 Retina MacBook Pro running OSX 10.9.5, an NTFS-formatted Seagate Backup Fast external hard drive (USB 3.0), and a Windows 8.1 installation that I have long run in Bootcamp and Parallels. Until two days ago, I used Parallels 8 and everything ran great (even though Parallels 8 didn't even support Windows 8.1!). Just upgraded to Parallels 11 and now that same installation of Windows can't mount the external hard drive anymore. I can mount the drive in OSX just fine, and it will show up in the VM under Network locations, but if I try to connect the drive to the VM, I get is a drive letter but explorer.exe hangs trying to access the drive so I can't actually use it.

    I rebooted into Bootcamp and verified that the drive runs perfectly (it does--I even checked for errors and it came up healthy): [IMG]
    You can see everything is A-ok.

    But when I try to connect the same external hard drive to the same installation of Windows via Parallels 11, I get this:
    [IMG]
    In Parallels 11, the drive shows as a generic "local disk" and device manager sees it as a "WPD FileSystem Volume" (yet lists the exact same drivers). Usually it appears like the screenshot above, but sometimes device manager even shows it with the drive name, but then will tell me the drive can't start, error "Code 10", and sometimes it will show an error under Universal Serial Bus controllers. I've tried mounting/unmounting, disabling/reenabling, uninstalling the drive, searching for new drivers, and resetting the VM a dozen times, but no luck establishing a real mount of the drive.

    Considering that the drive still works perfectly in Bootcamp, and that Parallels 8 ran the drive great before I upgraded two days ago, I'm pretty sure this is an issue with Parallels 11. Any solutions out there? Or does this need a Parallels patch?

    Hmm. Started my old WinXP VM and the drive did work. Started up Win 8.1 and it doesn't. So now I have a mystery. Drive works in Win 8.1 in Bootcamp. Works in Win 8.1 in Parallels 8. Works in WinXP in Parallels 11. Doesn't work in Win 8.1 in Parallels 11.

    More experimenting: downgraded to Parallels 8. Same Windows 8.1 installation, same external hard drive. Here's a screenshot.

    Everything A-ok again in Parallels 8.

    Forced to conclude, unfortunately, that there's an issue specific to Parallels 11, Windows 8.1, and external hard drives.

    Eureka! So I re-upgraded from Parallels 8 to Parallels 11 just now and was surprised to find that the drive worked in Parallels 11! ... UNTIL the new Parallels Tools finished installing. As soon as Parallels 11 Tools installed and the VM reset, the drive stopped working.

    Please fix this bug in Parallels 11 Tools.

    Here you go Marat. My support code is 44442-49370. I did three reports:
    • The first report shows the drive working correctly in Parallels 8: 73278682
    • The second report shows the drive working in Parallels 11 before Parallels 11 Tools are installed: 73280076
    • The third report shows the drive no longer working in Parallels 11 once Parallels 11 Tools are installed: 73282052
    I hope the dev team can contrast the reports and pinpoint the issue.

    I have same problem. I have tested several environment. But my case, usb 2.0 ok, but usb 3.0 HDD has problem.

    1. Windows 8.1 with parallels 10 -> no problem
    2. Windows 8.1 with parallels 11 but using old parallels tools 10 (when parallels tried to upgrade automatically, i terminated it) -> no problem
    3. Windows 8.1 with parallels 11 with new parallels tools -> same trouble with above report.

    I hope parallels dev team fix this issue asap.

    I re-installed windows 8.1-32bit version, but this time, it's not working again.

    Because of USB 3.0 issue, after i purchased subscription, I haven't been able to use parallels 11 version. already 1 month. If your team can not solve this problem, I want to refund my subscription, and i will consider to buy 12 version. skip 11 version.

    Hi guys,
    Please check the issue after setting a boot flag:
    Open VM configuration (http://kb.parallels.com/en/117287 ) > Hardware > Boot order > Advanced Settings and paste the following string in Boot flags textbox:
    devices.sfilter.enable=0

    If it doesn't help, kindly collect a new problem report once after the issue is reproduced: http://kb.parallels.com/en/9058
    paste here report ID number

    I have been using same system of iMac and 3 USB 3 HD and 2 USB 2 for three years with no problem. Upgraded to Parallels 11 end of August and have not been able mount USB 3 drives since but can mount the USB 2 drives, even purchased new USB 3 drive (different brand) and doesn't work. Doesn't work on Win 8.1, 10 and Ubuntu. All drives mount and function normally on MAC side. Have a MacBook pro with Win 10 and Parallels 10, all drives mount correctly. Have spent over 10 hours with support in India and all they do is "check resources". One time I did a Windows troubleshooting check and it stated "Parallels Paravirtualization driver has a driver problem" , however when I do that check now I didn't see the problem reported. I have wasted a good amount of time with support and my own investigation.
    Tried the "boot order" fix above and windows would not boot.

    Follow on to my last post, if I don't deselect the drive in a short amount of time from Parallels devices it will create a disk error on the external drive, same as you might get with a bad device driver. Ubuntu gives the error " Drive is not accessible, the parameter is incorrect" I have a second iMac which ran win 10 and Parallels 10 with no problem. I upgraded it to Parallels 11 about the same time and it will no longer mounts USB 3 drives.

    could you please clarify what you mean by "windows would not boot"? I checked that flag with Windows VM and it properly boots. Please kindly collect problem report with the boot flag after attempting to redirect USB 3.0 drive and opened file explorer that shows no drive. it will be really useful as developers are currently working on this matter. thanks in advance!
