Hi i ve just completed the latest update
Version 11.1.3 (32521) i have had windows 10 running fine on iMac and macbook pro i first noticed my iMac had lost menu and microsoft edge . i have tried every solution on the net but to no avail. my macbook pro has just loaded the same update with the same results , confirming that this is a clash with parallels and windows 10. Would be grateful for ideas on the subject i would assume a fix is required

Hi Alan1j, the issue might have occurred because of Windows user profile corruption. Microsoft is currently working on a resolution for this issue. In a meanwhile, you may try this article for the temporary fix and let us know how it works.

    Hi Paul Chris

About 2 weeks ago on my iMac with Parallels installed right clicking on a folder gave 10 seconds waiting before menu appeared and now after reinstall of W10 and after some W10 updates the problem starts again plus no start menu working. Having no problem on my old MacBook 2008 running W10 on Bootcamp.
Will we receive a notification here when Microsoft will send out an update which solves the problem?

    Thanks

To be notified with the resolution make sure you have Windows 'Check of Updates' turned ON under Control Panel > System & Security or All Settings.

This problem has been plaguing me on both my Macs. Reverting to previous snapshot and re-updating works, not always first time. I have not done the new user solution as I read elsewhere that the problem returns.

My two Parallels VMs are both in-place upgrades from Windows 7. I also have two Bootcamp installs which are both fresh installs. The Start button problem has never happened on these.

    Hi
I've now 3 times made a reinstall of W10 with keeping my files and it seems that until update KB3139907 there's no problem.
Have now stopped Windows update - http://www.thewindowsclub.com/turn-off-windows-update-in-windows-10 - so KB3140743 is not installed.
According to this: https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/comments/48htll/update_kb3139907_and_cumulative_update_kb3140743/ there are some troubles with KB3140743. I'm not an expert at all on these issues but have made up my mind to wait for next update from microsoft before turning W10 update on again.
If you not already know you can look here to see when a new update has arrived:

Further update on my situation. i have had to copy files across between temp user account to main account 5 times now, with the system becoming more flakey. Hitting the calculator icon will loose left click on menu as well as file manager, edge ,and calculator icon disappearing . Also it has now extended as soon as paste files across switch users back to main account , and then restarting now reverts me back to square one. Don't think this is a long term remedy . Also not sure if its connected but sending files to one drive or new name sky drive . Files only visible from computer that has sent it, they are highlighted blue. cannot be seen on one drive account when logged in over net or from second laptop.
To now view sky drive in finder i had to copy into left hand list parallels doesn't seem to have it in its list anymore in preferences
    HELP !!!!

Windows 10 just sucks that's all there is to it. I have lost my Start Menu 5 times on a VM that has been running for 2 years without issues until I upgraded to W10. Yesterday, I started from SCRATCH and built a brand new W10 VM. This morning? Same freaking thing!! No Start Menu!!!

Thankfully this is a VM and I have snapshots, but I keep having to copy my data out of the bad (no Start Menu VM) to the rolled back one. Totally USELESS OS.

Hi Ronald, same here! Read article ' 123375 KB Parallels: Windows 10 Start Menu doesn't work in Parallels' but I was wondering when this will be fixed?
I now reinstalled Windows 7 on Parallels, but Windows is pushing me to get on Windows 10 again :-S.
Did run on Windows 10 before, but had so many problems with the start button. In a half year time I already created about 10 new users, I did a new install and also a Windows reset. But every time the issue is coming back! I deleted the Win10 from Parallels and created a new VM with Windows7.
I also had contact with Windows support but they did not want to give support, because I'm running on Parallels!!

    BrigitteH,

YES! I read that article and I also asked in a separate Parallels Forum post about whether the Parallels team had any update to that KB. All they replied with was to call for support...which I don't have time for. You wait on the line for too long to end up in the hands of a Tier 1 Support person who always wants you to 'Re-install Parallels Tools'.

That said, I opened a support case with Microsoft...after some serious hassle I was able to get a fix from a Tier 3 Microsoft engineer and I've had to run the fix one more time since the executed the fix the first time. If you don't understand the command line or PowerShell the fix can be tricky to execute, but what it does is this:

The W10 Start Menu is actually supported by a database. In my case, that database keeps getting corrupted. The fix is a combination of two files. A .cmd and .ps1 file that literally deletes the Start Menu database and re-creates it from scratch. The downside is you lose all your custom Start Menu tiles and have to add them all back...the good news is you don't have to re-create your profile and copy all your data over....and also re-setup your Start Menu items.

I'm inclined to POST this fix here, but before I do you need to review your Windows Application Event Log to see if you're seeing a specific error event that tells you your Tiles Database is corrupt.

I hear you about the Upgrade to W10...I was in the middle of an Astrophotography imaging session one night and Microsoft decided it was time to upgrade my machine....I returned to MY machine to find it asking me to accept the W10 license agreement instead of finding 2 hours of images. Ticked off? You bet!!

    Ronald,

I am experiencing the exact same issue. I have created a new profile only to have the issue return a few days later. Have tried numerous fixes including some powershell changes but they did not work. I verified I have the same exact errors you mentioned and would like to try the fix that worked for you if your willing to post it. Thanks!
