Why cant I select Shared Networking for my VM-doesn't work with my verizon card

I have a verizon wireless pc card. on the mac it gets me on the internet fine but when I run Parallels Vm for WinXP I cant get an internet connection. I read the docs and it suggests for Network Adapter I select Shared Networking but in the settings for my VM Shared Networking is grayed out so I cannot select it. What am I doing wrong?
