    Tested guest OS:
    Fedora 22
    Ubuntu 14.04
USB HDD is formatted as NTFS/exFAT/ext4.

    Reproduction steps:
    1. Plug USB HDD
    2. Attach USB HDD to guest OS

It's not something related to file system type, it should be something wrong in lower level.

    dmesg:
I'll post detailed when I'm back home.
I only remember that there is an error like "not accepting adress", "timeout", or an error around "scsi" subsystem.

Meanwhile, I have a Windows 10 guest, and USB HDD works fine.

I submitted a ticket today but unfortunately it was a wasted of time, and what's more, even the problem was still unclear, state of the ticket had been changed to "RESOLVED" by someone. This made me a bit annoyed.

Hi, please unplug the USB device if it is connected via USB hub and connect it to a different USB port and check how it works. If the issue persists, please try this article.

Hi, in previous post, Seagate is connected to HUB, but Samsung is directly connected.

Having similar issue with latest Mint 18 (64 and 32 bit versions and latest Ubuntu) and Parallels 11.2.1 (32626)
It seems to go awry at point:
    scsi 9:0:0:0: tag#0 uas_eh_abort_handler 0 uas-tag 1 inflight: CMD IN
With the stock Virtual Appliance Ubuntu 14.0 it actually seems to work, instead you see:
    scsi9 : usb-storage 4-1:1.0
    mtp-probe: checking bus 4, device 3: "/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.6/usb4/4-1"
mtp-probe: bus: 4, device: 3 was not an MTP device

Here is a work around that prevents USB3.0 timeout occurring under latest Mint and Ubuntu distros
Im my case I have a Samsung T3 SSD drive, the vendor ID and product ID can be seen in the /var/log/syslog when connecting the device:
usb 4-1: New USB device found, idVendor=04e8, idProduct=61f3
    usb 4-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=2, Product=3, SerialNumber=1
usb 4-1: Product: Portable SSD T3
    usb 4-1: Manufacturer: Samsung
So to turn off uas for idVendor=04e8, idProduct=61f3 you can do this
    su
    echo "options usb-storage quirks=04e8:61f3:u" > /etc/modprobe.d/ignore_uas.conf
    locale-gen --purge --no-archive
    update-initramfs -u
    reboot
    Should be all good again
