In my opinion, Parallels is the better solution: performance wise (this because Parallels can maximise Mac integration), Parallels feels snappier. Compatibility wise: VMWare is the winner. VMWare is "THE" default virtualisation (also in business) solution and the most exotic systems, like Haiku, BSD, Icaros etc, etc; run out of the box on VMWare. Parallels usually requires additional tweaking and customising but you will not get guest-os support. In VMWare, this is possible because VMWare open sourced the guest utilities.. Financial: Parallels had adopted an subscription system or you pay a fee of around $55 dollars for a new version each year. Of course, you don't need to upgrade, but in the future that old version of Parallels might not run on Mac OS 10.16. VMWare is more expensive to aqcuire but does not upgrade each year, while also issuing servicepacks. The regular Parallels version has been crippled (on purpose: only 8 GB memory for a workstation, only 2 processors, no hypervisor, etc) so people are nudged towards Parallels Pro with its subscription model and higher price. VMWare is the winner from a financial perspective. If you've been a pro user for two years, you've paid $25 dollars more than you would have paid for VMWare.

So: if you like performance and integration and only want to run Windows or some mainline Linux distributions, go Parallels, if you want all kinds of strange and new systems or want to use use more then two processors or more than 8 GB memory, go VMWare.

    Good luck!
