On 2019 MacBook Pro 16" attempted to start a Windows 10 VM on MacOS Big Sur Beta 5 causes a hard crash of the computer. Only an SMC reset will start the computer after a huge fan surge and then the screen goes blank. Was working fine on Beta 4.

    Anybody else having this problem?

    Kernel Panic.
Did you boot to safe mode to disable PD16?

Did not need to do this. The computer starts up fine and everything else works fine. I can even start Parallels itself. It only crashes if I try to run my Win 10 vm on PD16. Guess I won't be using Parallels until either Beta 6 or until Parallels releases a fix. One of the known perils of running a beta OS.

You probably don't have your VMs set to auto start. It's also any VM guest not just Windows.

    Same behavior.
Removed Parallels 16 and redownloaded Parallels from Mac App Store. Works fine.

Tried your solution. Didn't work for me. It no longer crashes the computer, but the VM doesn't start.

    Not enough info...

Did you empty the trash and reboot after making the switch? You may have to download the app from the Mac App Store again if you didn't reboot. Since the rebrand of Parallels Lite in the MAS to Parallels, the apps now overlap.

If yes to the above, do you get an error? Have you tried Help > Send Technical Data and then See Details so you can review collected log files, e.g. vm.log to check for any errors?

Previously I was running "Apple" virtualisation and had this issue (PD15), I switched to "Parallels" hypervisor and things improved (still crashed once per day).
I was experiencing the same issues as above with PD16 and Big Sur beta 5, but switching back to "Apple" hypervisor, turning off adaptive graphics and enabling travel mode seems to be running ok (for now, 5mins)

Bingo! We have a winner. Switching from Parallels hypervisor to Apple Hypervisor makes it work again. I didn't do the other two things.

Although now Windows 10 VM starts, logs in, and then just hangs starting any applications

Switching the VM from Parallels hypervisor to Apple hypervisor fixed the problems for me using the version downloaded from Parallels website.

Don't know what to say. Your solution totally worked for me. Win 10 vm runs and all apps run correctly.

Yeah, not working for me (VM seems to hang, can't restart, etc). But luckily I have an alternative solution using Apple Hypervisor, using the "other" virtualisation software

The Apple hypervisor works for me so good enough for now. Better than crashing the computer! :)
