Hello, did you get any specific error message? Also did you run any app before the crash? Could you also please collect the tech report right after the crash and post the report's ID here?
Same issue for me. Whenever eGPU is connected, within a minute after starting the Windows 10 VM in Parallels, the whole machine freezes and reboots, same panic report as OP. Running a Sonnet Breakout Box 650 with a Radeon RX 580 (a combination recommended by Apple).
Same issue here too. Same error log as the OP. I'm also using a Sonnet Breakout Box 650 with a Radeon RX 580, and a 2019 MacBook Pro 16". There is no error message from Parallels. When the issue occurs, the display freezes for about 10 seconds, the MBP gets alarmingly hot, panics, and reboots. I have been using QSC Q-SYS Designer software (within the VM) at the time for all occurances of this issue. At the time of posting Parallels Desktop 15, Windows 10 (VM), Mac OSX Catalina, and QSC Q-SYS Designer are all fully up to date. This issue is definitely connected to having an eGPU attached and I can't replicate the issue without it. I've found that if I start the VM and the application with the eGPU detached and then attach the eGPU, it also seems to be fine (I've was able to run for about an hour under these circumstances - I've since restarted to see if I could still replicate both the fault and the workaround and I can). Hello guys, thank you for the provided information and tech reports. We will involve Parallels Engineering Team in this case for the further issue investigation. Thank you once again.
Same issue here too. Bought eGPU(Akitio Node) with RX570. My Mac mini freeze after some time of running windows 10 on Parallels. This never happened without eGPU. I think it's an issue related to eGPU and parallels.
Hey everyone. I found some additional info for the Parallels Engineering Team and a resulting workaround. (For the record, this is not a solution to the problem - it is a temporary workaround) I have disabled "Alway use high-performance graphics" under Hardware > Graphics > Advanced Settings (see attached screenshot) This has stopped the crashes for me, although it has slowed the performance of the VM, obviously.
Forgot to mention: I've also upgraded to Parallels 16. This in itself did nothing to change the nature of the original issue, but may have a bearing on the above workaround
Hi guys, Are there any updates? I am having the exact same issue as well. Running Parallels Desktop with an egpu connected. I am using Parallels 16 and mainly running Powersoft's Armonia Plus System Design on it. Whenever I tried to deploy my design to the amps or engaged network control my Mac Mini will freeze and then restart. I've tried taking out my graphics card from the egpu enclosure and I do not have freezes. I am not sure what else to try short of changing the graphic card I am using. I am using Sapphire Nitro RX580 4GB right now. Ticket ID is 2814006. I don't seems to be able to disable "Alway use high-performance graphics" under Hardware > Graphics > Advanced Settings. I do not have access to "Advanced Settings".
Hello, we've got your reply: Tested using Big Sur Public Beta and no crashes. Does the issue still actual?
I ran again on my Mac Mini today. After 4 hours it crashes. Same error. When I am running just Parallels without the eGPU no crashes at all.
I have this same issue. Crashes after approx 5-10 mins. Using a 2020 Mac mini i3, 64GB RAM, Razer Core X, sapphire rx 580 pulse 8gb, running windows under gaming profile to play counter strike. Runs great then everything freezes for about 5 seconds and then everything reboots. No issues without egpu, but not being able to use it defeats the purpose of this setup for me. Ran the built-in Apple diagnostic upon startup by holding "d" key - Apple says system is good.
Here's the latest crash - it's not always the same (usually CATERR, however). Here's my crash report from MacOS: panic(cpu 0 caller 0xfffffff024794cec): x86 CPU CATERR detected Debugger message: panic Memory ID: 0xff OS version: 17P6610 macOS version: 19H2 Kernel version: Darwin Kernel Version 19.6.0: Thu Jun 18 20:30:46 PDT 2020; root:xnu-6153.145.1~1/RELEASE_ARM64_T8010 Kernel UUID: 828E8E47-4C82-3639-83B9-4F7DB86934F6 iBoot version: iBoot-5540.140.12 secure boot?: YES x86 EFI Boot State: 0x16 x86 System State: 0x0 x86 Power State: 0x0 x86 Shutdown Cause: 0x7 x86 Previous Power Transitions: 0x70707060400 PCIeUp link state: 0x1614 Paniclog version: 13 Kernel slide: 0x000000001c7c8000 Kernel text base: 0xfffffff0237cc000 mach_absolute_time: 0x1f68945ad Epoch Time: sec usec Boot : 0x5f8f56d4 0x0000af69 Sleep : 0x00000000 0x00000000 Wake : 0x00000000 0x00000000 Calendar: 0x5f8f582f 0x000575e4 Panicked task 0xffffffe00043b600: 2245 pages, 158 threads: pid 0: kernel_task Panicked thread: 0xffffffe000712f88, backtrace: 0xffffffe015f6b4b0, tid: 309 lr: 0xfffffff024020860 fp: 0xffffffe015f6b4f0 lr: 0xfffffff0240206bc fp: 0xffffffe015f6b560 lr: 0xfffffff02413b770 fp: 0xffffffe015f6b610 lr: 0xfffffff0245ed5d8 fp: 0xffffffe015f6b620 lr: 0xfffffff024020024 fp: 0xffffffe015f6b990 lr: 0xfffffff02402037c fp: 0xffffffe015f6b9e0 lr: 0xfffffff024d6e974 fp: 0xffffffe015f6ba00 lr: 0xfffffff024794cec fp: 0xffffffe015f6ba30 lr: 0xfffffff02478611c fp: 0xffffffe015f6baa0 lr: 0xfffffff024788044 fp: 0xffffffe015f6bb50 lr: 0xfffffff024785854 fp: 0xffffffe015f6bbe0 lr: 0xfffffff02474ccb8 fp: 0xffffffe015f6bc10 lr: 0xfffffff02455ab14 fp: 0xffffffe015f6bc50 lr: 0xfffffff02455a398 fp: 0xffffffe015f6bc90 lr: 0xfffffff0245f8514 fp: 0x0000000000000000
Another update: On another thread, I saw some advice that under "boot flags" options, the line: video.gl3=2 should be added. I came across this because he external gpu utilization was low and game performance was sub-optimal for the hardware I'm running (top out at 40% utilization). After adding, the egpu performs better (like I would expect). But, the side effect of this code seems to be the crashing. After removing this, I no longer get the constant, reliable crashing with the egpu. But now the egpu is not as performative... So its something to do with the egpu utilization for sure. Seems like the parallels team has a problem managing the bandwidth to the egpu or something.
Nevermind - happened again, but it took a lot longer this time with the video.gl3=2 boot flag deleted: panic(cpu 0 caller 0xfffffff01e1e8cec): x86 CPU CATERR detected Debugger message: panic Memory ID: 0xff OS version: 17P6610 macOS version: 19H2 Kernel version: Darwin Kernel Version 19.6.0: Thu Jun 18 20:30:46 PDT 2020; root:xnu-6153.145.1~1/RELEASE_ARM64_T8010 Kernel UUID: 828E8E47-4C82-3639-83B9-4F7DB86934F6 iBoot version: iBoot-5540.140.12 secure boot?: YES x86 EFI Boot State: 0x16 x86 System State: 0x0 x86 Power State: 0x0 x86 Shutdown Cause: 0x3 x86 Previous Power Transitions: 0x70707060400 PCIeUp link state: 0x1614 Paniclog version: 13 Kernel slide: 0x000000001621c000 Kernel text base: 0xfffffff01d220000 mach_absolute_time: 0x18e5ad5923 Epoch Time: sec usec Boot : 0x5f8f58d3 0x000f2010 Sleep : 0x00000000 0x00000000 Wake : 0x00000000 0x00000000 Calendar: 0x5f8f6a37 0x0008999e Panicked task 0xffffffe0001ab000: 2266 pages, 158 threads: pid 0: kernel_task Panicked thread: 0xffffffe0003dfa18, backtrace: 0xffffffe015fab4b0, tid: 301 lr: 0xfffffff01da74860 fp: 0xffffffe015fab4f0 lr: 0xfffffff01da746bc fp: 0xffffffe015fab560 lr: 0xfffffff01db8f770 fp: 0xffffffe015fab610 lr: 0xfffffff01e0415d8 fp: 0xffffffe015fab620 lr: 0xfffffff01da74024 fp: 0xffffffe015fab990 lr: 0xfffffff01da7437c fp: 0xffffffe015fab9e0 lr: 0xfffffff01e7c2974 fp: 0xffffffe015faba00 lr: 0xfffffff01e1e8cec fp: 0xffffffe015faba30 lr: 0xfffffff01e1da11c fp: 0xffffffe015fabaa0 lr: 0xfffffff01e1dc044 fp: 0xffffffe015fabb50 lr: 0xfffffff01e1d9854 fp: 0xffffffe015fabbe0 lr: 0xfffffff01e1a0cb8 fp: 0xffffffe015fabc10 lr: 0xfffffff01dfaeb14 fp: 0xffffffe015fabc50 lr: 0xfffffff01dfae398 fp: 0xffffffe015fabc90 lr: 0xfffffff01e04c514 fp: 0x0000000000000000
Yet another update: disabled "multicore rendering" in counter-strike global offensive - seems to have helped the crashing (in conjunction with removing video.gl3=2) Performance suffers, however - I get frequent, but random large FPS drops (from 100+ down to 1 for about a second which is an eternity for games).
