    Greetings all

I am running Parallels for Mac 16.1.0 on my 2012 Mac Mini (quad core i7 2.3 with 16Gb RAM), running Mojave 10.14.6. I imported my Boot Camp Windows 10 partition. All of a sudden I get NO SOUND from the VM unless I reinstall Parallels Tools in the VM - every single time I boot the VM.

Sound works normally on the Mac side. Sound works normally when booted into Boot Camp. When booted into the VM, there are no errors....I've drilled down through the Windows device manager and I can see no errors, missing drivers, yellow exclamation points or anything....there's just NO SOUND. I have to click "reinstall Parallels Tools", and once the VM reboots, then I get sound.

And I have to do this every single time I start the VM. I "properly shut down" Windows every time. It seems that the Parallels Tools settings are not saving to the Windows VM.

While it's not "mission critical", it is very annoying.

Any ideas or things I could try would be appreciated.

    Thanks

I too, have audio issues. If I shutdown my VM (Windows 10), I will regain audio on my Mac side. Otherwise, both Mac and Windows lose audio quickly when Windows is running.

Thanks a lot for the provided information.
    Please perform the following steps:
    1. Shut down your VM
    2. Open VM configurations
    3. Go to Hardware -> Sound and Camera -> Advanced settings -> and change HD audio to AC'97
    4. Launch VM and change audio card back to HD audio

    Hello Maria
I tried your steps, but do not understand step 4. Still no sound! I had to re-install Parallels Tools to get sound. However, as usual, it did not survive a re-boot: there was no sound upon restarting the VM.

    Here is what I did:

    1. Shut down your VM. (Did that)
    2. Open VM configurations. (Did that)
    3. Go to Hardware ->Sound and Camera->Advanced settings-> and change HD audio to AC'97 (Ok, did that)
    4. Launch VM and change audio card back to HD audio. (Ummm...where? VM configurations will not allow me to change that setting while the VM is running. Unless you want me to shut it down again and then change it back? I also looked in the Windows -> Device Manager and see no "audio card" entry. I do see Sound, video and game controllers which yields -> Parallels Audio Controller. There are no error messages there, HOWEVER under "events" it lists the following:

    11/18/2020 7:58:36 AM Device not started (prl_sound)

Device PCI\VEN_1022&DEV_746D&SUBSYS_04001AB8&REV_00\3&11583659&0&FC had a problem starting.

    Driver Name: oem61.inf
    Class Guid: {4d36e96c-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}
    Service: prl_sound
    Lower Filters:
    Upper Filters:
    Problem: 0x15
    Problem Status: 0xC00000BB

And for fun, I went ahead and shut down the VM again, went back to Configuration -> Sound and Camera -> Advanced Settings -> and changed the audio BACK to HD Audio. Still no sound; however Windows -> Device Manager shows the following:

10/30/2020 7:23:36 PM Device started (HdAudAddService)
    Device HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_1AB8&DEV_0001&SUBSYS_1AB80101&REV_1001\4&22fd8e9d&0&0001 was started.

    Driver Name: hdaudio.inf

    Service: HdAudAddService
    Lower Filters:
    Upper Filters:

I also note that the entry is from almost 3 weeks ago and there is nothing more current in there.

So. Would you please clarify where I should "Change audio card back to HD audio" in step 4? Or please provide me with further suggestions?

    Thank you!

    And one more note:

With the VM shut down, and in the Configuration -> Sound and Camera menu, I click "Restore Defaults", and it changes back to HD audio - with the same result of no sound.

    Thanks!

Hello Maria, like Zoomie99, I also got confused with your step 4. Can you clarify?
My issue feels slightly different, although when I tried re-installing Parallels Tools, I will get sound (and mic) to work for a short while (seconds), and then both my VM and Mac lose audio (and mic).
    Details:
When I use my laptop without external monitor (HP Z32), keyboard and mouse (both Apple), I tend to get audio to hang on longer. I tried launching one program at a time after launching my VM (SonicWall VPN, SQL Server Management Studio, Outlook 2016, Skype), and my audio remains intact. When I launch Google Chrome (latest version), I would almost immediately lose audio. If I exit out Chrome, I would not get audio back until I Suspend the VM, sleep my mac, and wake it back up. Audio remains when I wake my VM from Suspend mode. Then, I went into Chrome, and cleared its cache, redo the steps above, and I'm able to have audio hang on. To re-iterate, no external monitor, keyboard, or mouse.
When I use my laptop WITH those three external devices, I would have audio when I boot into Windows. However, if I just launch as much as my Outlook 2016, I would immediately lose audio.
    Thanks!
ps: I may not be able to send you my Tech Report because I work with sensitive data, but I will provide as much info as I possibly can. Thanks!

Just updated to 16.1.1. Maria, can you clarify steps 2 and 3 again? To me, they are the same. Can you tell us how you get to VM Configurations in your step 2? Thanks!

OK, as mentioned before, I went ahead and switched back to HD audio per your instructions. I've done it twice now. Still no sound. I have tried both AC'97 and HD audio with the same result - no sound (until Parallels Tools are manually re-installed).

I updated to 16.1.1. This forced an update to Parallels Tools - which caused sound to work for that session (which is what I have been experiencing this entire time). However, after a reboot: Still no sound. I STILL have to manually re-install Parallels Tools every single time if I want to get sound.

Any further suggestions would be welcome. :)

Hi Maria, please continue to help Zoomie99 out.
Here's my update. For your step 2, I went to Control Center and from there, switch Type to AC'97. Then for your step 3, I went to Configure (which I believe it is the same thing) and switch it back to HD Audio. I then updated my Parallels to 16.1.1. Both sound and mic came back and look to be sticking around.
Now, I have another problem, which my VM seems to be freezing for random periods of 10 to 30 seconds. From another thread, someone suggested using Apple's Hypervisor, and switching over to it seems to be helping. I'm crossing my fingers.
Thanks for helping us out, but please continue to help Zoomie99 out.

Just one question: did you try to change the audio settings from HD audio to AC'97 and back and check?
