Microsoft announced their Initial Preview of GUI app support for the Windows Subsystem for Linux. Would this work?
I am wondering because of the requirement for a tiered hypervisor.

I haven't had any success getting WSL2 to work, which I believe is a requirement for the GUI app support. WSL1 works though.

How do you install WSL1? All I am looking for is bash without Cygwin.

Well... good question. I went down the road of setting up WLS 2 and messing with lots of things, installing various stuff that wasn't needed, etc. then when it didn't work I ran "wsl --set-default-version 1" to revert it back to WSL1.
I think this guide should work though if you just don't do the WSL2 stuff:

Thanks. Found something on google. Installing Ubuntu now.
That default version command looks good to prevent updates.

wsl --set-default-version 1 made the difference.
