I did a routine software update on an ubuntu VM and it installed kernel version 5.13.0-35, which seems to hang during boot before switching to the graphical console. Attempting to perform a recovery boot failed the same way. I used grub to boot -30 instead (which was what was there before) and that worked. I then did an apt remove and got rid of 5.13.0-35 and things are back to normal.
ok. this is something Ubuntu has done it looks like. i don't know what but it is very maddening. the same thing happens with vmware fusion. the later Ubuntu kernels wil not boot at all.
