My Parallels installation has run into a couple of snags.

    (1) There is no longer any sound ... no "windows startup chime" ... no sound from the programs. I clicked the Sound link on the Configuration page, and everything is set as it should be.

    (2) Whenever I try to boot Windows from scratch, the VM gets into a loop -- from a blue screen with text to the startup screen and back and forth. The only way around this problem is simply to revert to the last working version of the VM.

    (3) I've occasionally gotten an instruction to "run chkdsk utility." There is no icon with this name anywhere in Windows XP.

How can I fix these problems?

    Hello Ourisman,

What PD build are you using?

Could you please send me a screenshot of the blue screen with text?

    Best regards,
    Xenos

    I'm using Build 5582.

I have gotten a screen shot of the blue screen and emailed it to you. It says:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

    SESSION5_INITIALIZATION_FAILED

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen,
restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow
    these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed.
If this is a new installation, as your hardware or software manufacturer
for any windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware
or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing.
If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart
your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then
    select Safe Mode.

    Technical information:

    *** STOP: 0x00000071 (0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

Went through the process of "Repairing Installation" and ended up with the cycling blue and black screens when it was all done. All I could do was "revert" one more time -- but I still have no sound.

    any other ideas?

    Hello Ourisman,

Let's try to run chkdsk utility. Open My Computer browser and right click the C disk icon, choose Properties. Opet Tools tab and click Check Now button. In the pop-up window enable both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. Reboot Windows when the check is finished.

    Reinstall Parallels Tools.

    Best regards,
    Xenos

Would that it were this simple. I followed the instructions... checked the boxes you indicated, etc. Windows wanted to run chkdsk utility upon restart. However, upon restart, kept going into the constant cycling between blue and black screen. Tried shutting down, and same problem.

Only solution is to "Restore" to where I was before.

Why can't Windows work as well as the Mac OS?

    Hello Ourisman,

Could you please tell, how do you restore? Do you use VM snapshots or Windows last known good configuration?

Did you follow the steps proposed in the article from Microsoft Support KB?

    Best regards,
    Xenos

I restored by using VM snapshot...

I did not have the Microsoft instructions, so I will try that now.

Many more problems... I couldn't boot from the CD, so your tech support had me make a disk image, which I did. Booted from the disk image ... and ended up with this screen.

Tried to follow the steps using the Microsoft instructions, but they didn't work.

    What's the next step?

    Hello Ourisman,

It's OK. Just type WINDOWS, not Winnt when going through the step 2:

    cd C:\WINDOWS\System32
    ren Ntoskrnl.exe ntoskrnl.new
    cd C:\WINDOWS\$ntuninstallq811493$
    copy Ntoskrnl.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\
    Exit

    Best regards,
    Xenos
