Sometimes when I get email, a file tagged as a Windows file. For example, today I received a WMV file while reading my mail in OS-X. When I clicked on the attached file, Windows started loading automatically. When it booted up, I received the following error message... Windows cannot access \\psf\home\library\maildownloads\filename.wmv If I instead go into Windows and access my mail there directly, when I click on the attachment, the video loads and plays. I think this is some kind of association problem and I'm wondering if there is some setting either in OS-X or Windows that will allow this type of file to play IF started in OS-X. Reading between the lines, it's clear that I can access this type of file with a little "swerving", but I would rather have it start automatically from within OS-X even if it means Windows 7 has to be started up first.
You should be able to get some sort of viewer for most files without starting up windows.. e.g. flip4mac will allow you to view wmv files in quicktime, just change the file associations on the mac to run quicktime rather than media player in windows etc. The problems probably because it downloads the file to a temporary location to allow viewing, but this is not accessible from windows due the the folder sharing settings in the virtual machine.. maybe just download the file first to your mac home folder which you can then access from windows once started up.. I would look into the first option as it will be much quicker, most things will open at least to preview in some form on the mac before opening it up fully to edit in windows if necessary..
Thanks Stuart, Installed "Flip4Mac" and now the file runs in OS-X rather than beaming up Parallels/Windows where it couldn't access the file.
Actually what you need to do is to locate this file in Finder, choose "Get Info" and change the association to any Mac application you like (for all files)
