I have an old reliable and faithful terminal server running 2K3. Its been running version 6.1 of 2K for a few years. It was such a headache back then to get the universal printing working that I vowed to never upgrade it again. I also never upgrade my 2x clients because every upgrade would take down my entire system. Well... that server crashed. So I had to setup another server. I put the same version on there... no universal printer. I upgraded it to the latest and greatest AppServer XG... no universal printer. I tried new client software, still no universal printing. Were can I find the exact steps to make the universal printing work? Surely after all these years, it has to work by now. Who has the answers?
Hi, meanwhile the universal printing engine was completely rewritten by 2X and works much better than back there. If you not already did, please start by checking the current manual at http://www.2x.com/docs/en/manuals/pdf/2 ... Server.pdf. If it comes to the universal printing you have to start at page 156 and just follow it stp by step to find all needed tabs and settings in conjunction with the current version. Kind Regards,
OK... I read the manual and its pretty simple. Or so it is supposed to be. I upgraded to the latest software. I am on 10.5.1038 on both appserver xg and the client. I am running the 64 bit windows client. I can see that all printers are mapped as they should be. However, when I print something, it just sits in the queue on the server and never gets transferred to the client computer for printing. The default printer on the client side is connected locally with a USB cable. No printing... But.... I have a second license for 2x. I installed it on the backup server. It seems to print just fine. I need to get the primary server to print because that is where everything is setup for the users. What is the difference between the two servers. Is there a registry key or something else I can check. I need help! Thanks Maurice
Hi Maurice, I assume that you tried the printing at the main server as well as at the backup server with the same client device and user connected, so we seem to have a server side issue. Please open the 2X AS management console and enable the logging feature. This can be found in the logging tab under information. Right after please reproduce the issue and post or attache the logfile. Maybe we can see in there where this endless queueing comes from. KR,
Yes, both the main and backup server were tried with the same client version on the same computer. I am not sure that the log shows much. But I turned it on, then tried to print a couple of documents. The queue on the server contains the items to print and they are sitting there... attached is the log file. But I don't see anything. Do you? Is it possible that there is a windows error?
Hmm... you are right. Sadly I am not able to catch anything valuable regarding your printing issue from the log. Thanks anyway for posting. For sure there is also the possibility that you do encounter a MS OS error/windows error. Does your system- and or application-eventlog show anything regarding the printing? Do you have a native TCP/IP port printer installed to this server too or is there a printer connected directly? Does this printer print? If the server didn't got restarted so far also the restart of the spooler service could do the trick. KR,
Hmm.... there is no local printer attached to this server. So... I installed my PDF printer driver (BullZip) I can print to it just fine. This maybe indicates that the printer spooler is working. When I print something else to a 2x mapped printer, it quickly says "Spooling". Then the status goes blank. Is there some sort of tunnel between the print queue and the client?
I tried something else. first, I opened the app server console and configure the universal printing for Legacy Mode <2X Universal Printing> then I configured the options on the client to only redirect a specific printer. when I reconnect to the server and try to print I get the following lines added to the log.. Error 04/00000064 Tue Sep 11 00:04:55 2012 TS Agent PARADIGM23: [E 08/0000FFFF] Can't add printers) Error 04/00000064 Tue Sep 11 00:04:52 2012 TS Agent PARADIGM23: [E 08/00000001] Failed to read data from agent) Does this error mean anything?
Sorry, so far we havn't had an error alike yours at our customer sides. Without analyzing your issue remotly I do not have a good idea to solve it. If there isn't anyone else comming up with s.th. I would advice to post your current issue incl. the logs to the 2X support team at http://2x.helpserve.com/. Thanks,
Well... not sure what the problem is. But I opened a ticket with the 2x support and they gave me a link to a build that got the printing working. Now...that it works, its not what I want. Prior to loading version 10.5, I was on version 6.2 which simply had the universal printer driver. It was a server side driver that communicated with the 2x client to give printer functionality without having to map any printers. It was super simple. I am told that particular functionality went away in version 8. Bummer... Mapping all those printers for all of my users won't be a good solution for me. I looked at some other print solutions that I could purchase to get me what I had before, but I realized that I can code up something really quick to allow me to print to a pdf on the server, have it automatically copied to the client computer where it can be called up and printed. Took two hours and I have something working already. I just need to clean it up. I still like the 2x software, but I will not be using the 2x printing feature anymore. I'll be using my own. If anyone is interested in how or why I'm doing this, just ask.
Hello, The 2X AS XG still supports the old method of Universal Printing... Open the 2X Console, and browse to the "Universal Printer" section. in the "Printer rename patters, select from the "..." button the "<2X Universal Printer>" variable. The old universal printer solution should be used. Thanks, Seb
