Anyone know how to force Parallels 6 Desktop to run in 32-bit mode on Snow Leopard? According to the Activity Monitor, PRL_VM_APP runs in 64-bit mode.

I have no need for 64-bit mode on anything and I suspect that running all apps in 32-bit mode would return battery life lost in the Leopard to SL "upgrade".

I seriously doubt that running in 32 vs. 64 bit mode has much of an affect on battery life.

In any case, you can always run an app in 32 bit mode by going into its "Get Info" window and force running in 32-bit.

There seems to be some misunderstanding about what running in 32 bit vs 64 bit means, like strells said, it's unlikely that there is much effect to battery life, in fact, this is the first time I heard such claim, and I've been following the introduction of 64bit personal computing.

Saying that you have no need of 64 bit computing on anything is a strange claim, unless you know REALLY WELL what you are talking about here, and not mere suspicions or other unexplainable hymns, you shouldn't be even taking into consideration this aspect. Macs work beautifully because you're not suppose to micromanage them, you're suppose to use your time productively, if you start micromanaging these things and then, 2 or 3 months later, suddenly something doesn't work and you don't remember anymore that you changed to 32 bits (want an example? you want to assign more than 4 GB to a VM and you can't because that's only possible when running in 64bit mode), you'll be a frustrated user and no one will be able to help you because no one will take in consideration that you might've changed this.

My advice? Stop caring about 32 vs 64 bit and let the defaults for each program work.

As someone who was programming software on UNIX long before Apple used it as a base for OSX, I know a little about Operating Systems and 32-bit vs 64-bit. In environments that don't need 64-bit (read "most"), it becomes resource intensive very quickly (memory, disk space, etc). What used to work well in 2Gb of memory requires 4Gb and can be very taxing on the Memory Management System, menaing more CPU cycles. More CPU cyles and more memory require more power, reducing battery life.

As such, I KNOW REALLY WELL what I'm talking about and KNOW that for my needs, I don't need 64-bit anything, nor do the majority of users. So, thanks for the non-answer. Next time, YOU might want to do YOUR homework before writing something that makes it clear you don't understqnd the issues.

Strells - I tried to force 32-bit thru the "Get Info" approach, but it didn't work.

Actually Specimen is generally right and turning it to 32-bit will not help with making your battery work longer.
Anyway, PD7 work only in 640bit mode - there is no way to turn it to 32 bit. Read more here: http://kb.parallels.com/en/111881
