There seems to be some misunderstanding about what running in 32 bit vs 64 bit means, like strells said, it's unlikely that there is much effect to battery life, in fact, this is the first time I heard such claim, and I've been following the introduction of 64bit personal computing.
Saying that you have no need of 64 bit computing on anything is a strange claim, unless you know REALLY WELL what you are talking about here, and not mere suspicions or other unexplainable hymns, you shouldn't be even taking into consideration this aspect. Macs work beautifully because you're not suppose to micromanage them, you're suppose to use your time productively, if you start micromanaging these things and then, 2 or 3 months later, suddenly something doesn't work and you don't remember anymore that you changed to 32 bits (want an example? you want to assign more than 4 GB to a VM and you can't because that's only possible when running in 64bit mode), you'll be a frustrated user and no one will be able to help you because no one will take in consideration that you might've changed this.
My advice? Stop caring about 32 vs 64 bit and let the defaults for each program work.
