i wasn't able to find an answer by searching the forums. if this has been covered, i apologize. please send me the link to the thread if it has been covered already.

i'm using parallels 4 on a MacPro running OS 10.5.5.

i'm getting 4 different IP address and I am baffled as to why and which one to use for Windows RDP, which brings me to my questions:

    1. Can i use Windows RDP client (on a PC) to access a Mac running Parallels?
    2. why are there 4 different IP addresses? which one do i use if i want to connect to a Mac running Parallels?

In System Preferences, i get this:

    Ethernet 1: 10.1.4.139
    Etherent 2: 10.1.4.124
    Parallels Shared Networking Adapter: 10.211.55.2

And in Windows (in Parallels), when I do run the "ipconfig" command from the Command Prompt, it tells me my IP address is: 10.1.4.243

Why are there 4 different IP addresses? Why does the Parallels Shared Networking Adapter have an IP address on a completely different subnet?

In parallels, when i click on "Devices" in the menu, and then select "Network Adapter 1" the settings are:

    Network Adapter 1
Enable is checked (and grayed out)
    Connected is checked

Bridged Ethernet is selected with "Default Adapter" selected in the drop-down menu.

    Thanks for your help.

If you have Shared Network setting for VM, you shouldn't get access to Internet, but I do not see, that you are not able, thus your connection is Bridged
Parallels Shared Networking Adapter is for shared network, so it is not using in your case.

    Yes, you can,

so if i understand you correctly, in the OS 10.5.5 Network System Preferences, the "Parallels Shared Networking Adapter" is used only for Parallels if I have the Parallels VM Configuration for Network Adapter 1 set to "Shared Networking"?

If I am able to use the Windows RDP client to connect to the Parallels VM, which IP address do I use? I tried testing the Windows RDP connection using all 4 IP addresses and it never worked.

And once again, why do I get a different IP address when I run the "ipconfig" from the Windows command prompt compared to the IP address that the MacPro Ehternet interfaces? Using the IP address from "ipconfig" does not work either.

    I'm confused.

so which IP address do I use when trying to connect to the Parallels VM from another Mac/PC using the Windows RDP client?

The 2 Ethernet interfaces on the Mac running Parallels has 2 IP addresses and when I run "ipconfig" in Parallels, I get a different IP.

I tried using all of the IP addresses but none work.

You should use the IP Address that it shown in the "ipconfig" command in Windows. i.e., assuming that IP address left the same as in your first posting, the 10.1.4.243 (actually, it shouldn't be changed).

About why you cann't connect.. Most likely that Parallels Internet Security blocks incoming remote desktop connections (or may be Windows Firewall), so please try to disable them for the moment.
