Updated to 4560 today, tried updating the tools inside XP. Not only did the VM start crashing at a certain point during tools install ("checking your new software"... something), but EVERY time i restarted the Parallels app and rebooted XP, it crashed again.

I've tried doing lots of things - booting in safe mode, and uninstalling the tools. Doesn't help.

    Turning off shared folders. Ditto.

    Turning off DirectX support. Ditto.

    and so on. Nothing helps.

Then i tried deleting the HDD (sigh... it was essentially unusable, crashing every time i booted, no matter what) and reinstalling XP from scratch. Works fine UNTIL i install the tools. BAM! Crash.

I'm waiting for an update before I try installing Windows XP again. So far, it is useless for me to try running it with Parallels Tools.

Unimpressive. I need better quality software for my server, and this doesn't cut it.

Please try to disable Mac and Windows applications sharing in VM configuration editor.

sorry to hear that "Nail Scissors"

my winXp SP2 just keeps on trucking under 4560

on update I got a couple of Windows "found new hardware" dialog boxes

never never OK these on a VM before you have installed Parallels Tools

I then ran PC Health and cloned the new VM

    see
    http://onecare.live.com/
I use the freebie from the live.com toolbar

just good housekeeping along with AVG ante virus
    Sygate personal Firewall etc etc

I increase the RAM on the VM to the max recommended 924
    otherwise no changes

Just did a fresh reinstall of XP SP2. During the step (or slightly thereafter of) "testing yoru new softwareinstallation" of Parallels Tools Install, Parallels crashes.

On rebooting Windows XP in parallels i get the error message:

    "RUNDLL: Error loading \PrlSAShellExt.dll

The specified module could not be found."

I'm getting the same RUNDLL window message, "Error loading \PrlSAShellExt.dll" "The specified module could not be found". It started after I upgraded to build 4560 of verison 3. I also can't install Parallels Tools... gets about 3/4 of the way through the install and then the "application unexpectedly quits." I suspect the error message might be related to the problem of not being able to complete the Tools install??

I've tried re-installing the new build, turned off sharing, etc. but nothing seems to work. Do I have to re-install Windows XP? This seems a bit crazy if so.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. And being a non-windows person, if somebody can tell me what that RUNDLL error means, that'd be great too.

What Parallels support told me to do -

Email from Support suggested this to install Tools after upgrade:

Cancel the installation & delete the installed Parallels Tools (Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs) and then open Windows/System32/drivers and remove prlfs.sys file (if present) and try to install PT using ISO image:

    1. Start Parallels
    2. On the top of the screen click on Edit/Virtual Machine
3 Choose DD/DVD-ROM from the list of devices
    4. From the left choose "Use Image File" and point in the location of vmtools.iso
    Here it is Macintosh HD-Library-Parallels-Tools-vmtool.iso
    5. Start Windows
    6. In My Computer you can find image CD, just click on it and install tools.

After that go again to Cinfiguration Editor and change "Use Image File" to "Use CD/DVD-Rom".

I stumbled across Windows/System32/drivers (I now have no idea where!) and did have a file PRLFS (capitalized with no .sys). I don't know if that's the same file and I have not heard back from support. However, that's the workaround they suggested. Sometimes the directions are difficult for non-Windows users!

Archy, I had a similar problem with 4560. Long story, but after reverting to 4128 the problem persisted, until I custom installed Parallels Tools without Application Sharing component. Only then did my WinXP installation stop crashing Parallels. Things are working now. John

    Adding Parallels Tools with ISO

Follow-up to previous post - I trashed the PRLFS file (apparently on Mac this is capitalized without the .sys suffix) and then followed the support suggestion to install tools via ISO. It worked just fine. I was trying to attach a Jeppesen Skybound reader in order to update an airplane GPS card. I had to enable "Automatically attach USB devices" in order for the reader to be recognized. The update worked perfectly. BTW I am running OS 10.4.10 and the newest Parallels update.

Ever since I have had Parallels on my iMac, the Tools componet start reinstalling itself. After I have done it once more, I make a snap shot of that install and revert to it when I lose network connectivity or the "tools" install creeps up. I have unistalled Parallels thoroughly once and when I upgrade, I always start with uninstall. I suspect it has to do with read write permission on one or more files included in the "tools" install. Go figure.:(

    Hi all,

RUNDLL - is rundll32.exe windows application that allows to execute functions directly from DLL files. While installing tool installer executes some functions from our DLL (PrlSAShellExt.dll) that allows to have Shared Mac Applications. This error means that installer can't find this dll (which must be in Tools Center directory). Due one bug (that already fixed) in installer you can't uncheck one of Favorite Applications and Shared Applications features (only both) while custom install. May be this is the reason of this error message.

We can't reproduce bug with Parallels crashing after tools update. Everything works fine for us, so it is very difficult to eliminate this bug. If someone can upload VM with this bug to our ftp please write here. Also any detailed information about your system and your actions to reproduce this bug will be very helpful.

Anyone who wants to help me with resolving this problem please e-mail me to andreyp@parallels.com

Latest release does NOT solve problem

I just instaled the latest Parallels version.

The problem is still there - Paralellels bombs as soon as the Tools install nears completion.

    BUT!

At least I don't get any error messages on bootup anymore.

But Parallels Tools still doesnt show up on the Remove Software... list in Control Panel, probably becasue the install process does not complete. Too bad.

    :/

Can't install the network driver from within Paralelles tools, either, it just ives me a generic error message.

But the Para Tools task bar icon shows up in the notification area.

    :(

Mine crashed totally after installing the tools - every time it tried to boot, the wonderful Blue Screen of Death appeared - something I hoped to never see again!!!

I had to run the Vista repair CD which reloaded the basic drivers and it now works again, but is about 50% slower than under the previous release of Parallels.

News: I did a selective install of ParaTools, and selected only (apart from the mandatory elements), the following: clipboard sync, disk compatcting, filesharings, mouse sync, network driver, shared folders, timesync, toolscenter and video driver. AS EXPECTED: IT DID NOT CRASH!

Hint to the developers: one of the excluded modules is causing the crash.

I had this EXACT same experience, only with Windows XP.

After not being able to boot up successfully, I deleted Windows. I reinstalled under Parallels but now it's just doing the same thing again. I tried the ideas posted on this page and now I can't boot into Windows any more. As of right now, Parallels does not work for me at all. I can not use Parallels without it crashing right away.

You should try rebooting in "Safe Mode" by pressing F8 when Windows starts and uninstall Parallels Tools. Then reboot normally and reinstall Parallels Tools minus "Shared Applications" and "Favourite Applications". I did this and all seems now to be well... not particularly happy about the latest debacle though!

I tried your idea reddog57 but in safe mode when I tried to uninstall Parallels Tools it told me I had to reboot to allow Parallels Tools to finish installing since it never finished. Unfortunately since Windows crashes EVERY time I start up I don't have that option. I tried turning off all of the Shared / Fav Applications etc options but still no success. Booting in Safe Mode didn't crash, however, so that's still good to know I guess.
