    I thought I would try installing the latest Parallels 4 build. My first attempt created a glacially slow Windows when it 4.0 first came out. It took me a week to get rid of it and get my old Parallels 3 working.

    I installed this version, and started it. Parallels saw 4 VMs, two which it couldn't find. (The other two had the same names as the first two). I opened one and expected it to start converting it, but got the following window:

    The virtual machine "Microsoft Windows XP migrated" is
    already registered.

    You cannot register a virtual machine more than once.

    OK

    I pressed OK and got:
    Failed to convert the virtual machine.

    The virtual machine could not be converted to the new format.
    OK

    What's my next step? I no longer have a working Parallels Windows VM.

    Solution was:

    Click on Finder->Applications->Utilities->Terminal and type
    prlctl list -a
    it will show you the list of the Virtual Machines. then type

    prlctl unregister "Name of the Virtual Machine"

    Please copy and paste the name of the Virtual Machine and hit enter.

    Doing a "man prlctl", showed this to be a Parallels thing
