Any VM backup advantages to splitting disk image into 2GB files?

When splitting a disk image unto 2GB files, do the older 2G hdd files remain static and unchanging? Or do you just end up with 50 or more 2GB files that need backing up constantly?

Background

Backing up VMs are time consuming. The large hdd file constantly changes and can be 100GB or larger.
