I am not sure if I can solve your problem, but I can tell you how I do backup for Quicken.

    1) I run a program called SuperDuper! to backup my whole iMac to a Firewire drive. It creates a bootable disk so if my hard drive goes bad, I can boot from the Firewire drive. It backs up the whole parallels virtual machine and everything in it as part of this process. It runs automatically every night.
    2) Periodically, I backup the Quicken files to the shared folder. I have a sub-folder in the shared folder for Quicken. The shared folder is also backed up every night by Superduper, but by running Quicken backup to the shared folder, I can periodically back it up to a CD or DVD from the Mac side, or send it to another computer on the LAN. Also, if my system crashes and I want to just move my quicken to another computer, I can do this easily from the shared folder backup.

Obviously, I am well protected from hard disk crashes, but I am more vulnerable to a fire that destroys both the computer and the Firewire Drive.

By the way, SuperDuper works fine backing up to and booting from a USB drive, it is just slower.
