I have Parallels 3.0 and I run windows XP on my Mac Book Pro. When trying to launch Parallels it stalls with a black screen with the following message " Boot from hard drive". Any suggestions?

I have read the instructions on how to fix the problem but it appears that I will have to revert to VM as far back as NOV 08. I do not want to lose any data. Is there not a way that i can simply rename the VM and then redirect parallels to look for the renamed VM?

No, this way will not work
Try to merge Snapshots, in this case all data will be in place,
For merging Snapshots use Parallels Image Tools from Applications/Parallels Desktop
    and again - backup please
