Brand new and can't log in!

I have just received Parallels via the Macupdate Promo - the only reason for buying it. I have migrated my VMWare Fusion VM via the Transporter and launched it. I get to my login screen but the mouse pointer will not move. I have tried turning on and off the trackpad/keyboard setting; I have used a USB mouse. Nothing. I can't get into the machine to install the tools ... I'm starting to regret the purchase!

Macbook Pro 15" 2.4 GHz Core2, 2GB mem.
Windows XP from VMWare Fusion migration - no BootCamp
Parallels @ latest version (downloaded today)

And 42 years old!
(I'm just trying to think of anything you might need to know!)
