    Hi,

I am evaluating parallels desktop for mac build 5584 on my MacBook running Leopard 10.5.1. Overall I am very happy with the product, but I have found one very strange and annoying bug.

When I open any file under my the shared folder using ConTEXT, make changes, and then save the file it's permissions will get reset to rw-r--r--. This was on a perl file that was marked executable, with it's original permissions being rwxr-xr-x. It seems that the mode the file is set to is the default umask, but this means that any scripts that are being edited wind up not being scripts any more on return to unix.

I believe that parallels should not be allowing this overwriting to occur. I checked that it does not happen in windows notepad, but I still don't think this is normal. It must be something to do with the mapping of windows to unix permissions. I should also mention that I have also been evaluating VMWare Fusion, and while it has other flaws it does not exhibit the same behaviour [just for the sake of comparison]. As one last bit of information, the VM is running XP SP2 and it is a normal VM (not boot camp).

ConTEXT can be obtained from www.context.cx. To reproduce, simply chmod 755 ...../<somefile> in a shared folder, open it in ConTEXT, make a change and save it. Then check the file's permissions again and (I hope) note the difference.

    Thanks, Alex J Burke.
