I already run Parallels Desktop for Mac on my MacBook but wanted to do something I've never done before with Parallels so wanted to check my understanding is correct.

I have a recently deceased relative who has a lot of family photos and has done a lot of research into our family tree with the information being kept on their PC running Windows XP. The research is on an obscure PC family tree application but they haven't kept the install disks, the PC is a mess with files all over the place, I will have limited time at the relative's house, and they lived overseas, so I don't want the hassle of shipping the PC back.

I thought the best approach would be to create a VM from my relative's PC. I could then access the VM any time I wanted using Parallels on my Mac and sort out and organise the information at my leisure.

I believe I should be able to do the following:
    - install Parallels Transporter agent on my relative's PC
    - use Parallels Transporter agent to create a VM of my relative's PC on an external hard disk connected to the PC
    - run the VM of my relative's PC using Parallels on my MacBook

I would have to download Parallels Transporter agent in advance and put it on a USB HD to install it on the PC as there won't be internet access where the relative's PC is, and I wanted to create the VM on the external USB HD connected to my relative's PC as I didn't want to rely on being able to set up a network between my relative's PC and my MacBook.

When I'm back home, I would then run the VM of my relative's PC using Parallels on my Mac and would have lots of time to sort out all of the information.

Is my understanding correct, and is there anything else I need to take into account?

    Hi, mikerob

There is some details. You are able to open your VM from external storage on your Mac. Also you are able to use special migration scenario on your Mac (for more information see Using an External Storage Device section).
If you use External Storage scenarion on your Mac:
    - VM configuration adopted to your Mac hardware
    - you are able to migrate documents from VM to your Mac (Like a Mac/Like a PC choice) automatically
