Desktop not showing

Running XP on Mac OSX, when I launch the VM, I get the Windows Taskbar and Start Menu, but the Desktop is absent and I can 'see through' to my Mac desktop background. If I select the Windows 'Show Desktop' Quick Launch icon, the background returns, until I launch another program. After closing that program, it reverts to the 'transparent' state.
