I have CAD software installed in Windows 7 through Parallels 10. CAD software will generate Thumbnails to preview the part which is in the file, much like the preview in OS X Finder.

    1. Is there a way to have OS X Finder display the Windows 7 thumbnails for files that must be opened via a Windows 7 application?

    2. Some CAD applications also store a preview of the CAD image in the CAD file. Is there any way to display this preview in OS X Finder using the Windows 7 application?

    Thanks.

Any information on extending the Thumbnail capability of OS X Finder would be helpful. Thanks.

Do Parallels employees read this forum to understand user issues? Why should I use Parallels if I can't even get basic support for such a simple feature? This should be an easy issue to address.

Hi CharlieP, could you let us know the format of the file which you are trying to view in Thumbnails?

Arun, thank you very much for your followup!
ANY CAD format: STP, STEP, IGS, IGES, CATPart, CATProduct
I am running CATIA on Windows 7. Thumbnails display in Windows Explorer but not in Finder.

  6. Hello CharlieP,
try to enable sharing between your Windows VM and Mac and check whether you are able to display Thumbnails in your Mac finder.

Arun & Pradeep, thank you for your support on this issue. I clicked on the link you suggested and it refers to no less than SIX types of sharing. Exactly WHAT type of sharing are you suggesting I enable?

    Shared Folders Tool
    Shared Profile Tool
    Shared Cloud
    SmartMount Tool
    Shared Applications Tool
    Shared Internet Applications Tool

I already have folders completely shared, so I don't really understand what else I could share to make the thumbnail images appear. In a sense this is exactly the crux of my question: WHAT do I share to make thumbnails appear and HOW?

Hi CharlieP, please follow the steps mentioned below to fix the issue:
    1.Shut down your virtual machine
2.Open Finder and go to the Application (Parallels) folder:
In the Finder menu bar click Go -> Go to Folder
In the opening Go to the folder textbox type in:
    ~/Applications (Parallels)/
Click Go. The Applications (Parallels) folder will open up
3.Locate your virtual machine's folder and move it to Trash.
    4.Start your virtual machine.
5.Open your virtual machine's configuration > Options > Applications. Un-check and then check back the Share Windows applications with Mac checkbox.
This will re-create the Windows apps links on the Mac. Now check the issue.

This page is the top Google search result for "parallel show windows file preview thumbnails in Finder"

Can a Parallels employee please provide a real answer to this question besides "delete your current setup and let Parallels prepare a new setup".

I never did get it to work given your last advice and I just installed Parallels 13 on my system and I get the EXACT same problem: File Preview Thumbnails for a Windows 7 Application associated file type show up fine in Windows 7 but they don't show up AT ALL in Parallels 13.

Open issues like this left unresolved for over 2 years is pretty pathetic.
