I have Parallels 4.0 installed with Smart Select. I set Smart Select to Standard (i.e. a .doc-file is associated to Word on Mac). However, when I doubleclick on a Word-document (.doc-file) that resides either inside my VM (e.g. on the Windows desktop) or anywhere on my company's server it still opens the Windows version of Word when I try to open such a document from within the VM. If I select the same document from within Mac Finder, the Mac program opens.

I thought that Smart Select would allow me to make a general decision that any .doc document would be opened in the Mac version of WORD. Same problem appears with any other office application (Excel etc.).

Also, when opening a file from within Outlook (e.g. a file attachment I received with a mail), the Windows-version of the program will always be used to open it. I would naturally also want the Mac version to open here.

Do I misunderstand the concept of Smart Select or is this a problem of my installation/configuration?

    Thanks!

    Hello, bidione,

if you would like some kind of files to be always opened by an exact application - just tell your Windows about it.
Start the machine, select a file (let us say MS Word document with .doc extension), right-click on it and choose Properties.
You should see 'Opens with...' line and Change button near it.
Hit Change and select your desired Mac application (Text Edit, Word for Mac or whatever).
Apply changes and since you click OK all the .doc files will be opened in Mac application you specified.
