Does Parallels v4 become disabled over time?

I created several virtual machines in late 2009 with v4, but then I didn't work with them much over the past year. I decided not to upgrade until I decided what my needs would be. Today I tried to relaunch Parallels, but I'm told by the application's About page that it is not a registered product (My Account still indicates that my v4 is a permanent license).

I see that due to three version upgrades in less than three years, support for my product is completely cancelled. So I am automatically concerned that Parallels is not a good fit for my needs. But why would the product stop working entirely? Was there something in the license to indicate that the product would stop working beyond a certain point?

I am reluctant to reinstall my v4 and risk losing the VMs I built before, but I don't know what other choices I have. Is this a sign to just give up and switch to VMWare?
