I am using a macbook with OS 10.4.10 and PD 2.5 with latest build update.

Im in africa in a spot where the only way to connect to the internet is with a specific modem that only has a windows driver and connects via usb. The drivers have worked fine in windows XP on the VM and the VM OS recognises and configures the modem no problem.

There is, however, some sort of hardware conflict that prevents the OS from dialing out with the modem. If I try to start a connection using the modem, I get this error message:
    "Opening port...
Error 633: The modem (or other connecting device) is already in use or is not configured properly"
It seems to me like the mac OS is still accessing the usb port in some way. In my mac OS system profiler the device is seen under usb but I don't see it coming up anywhere else. My fear is that the mac OS simply 'knowing the unit is there' is enough to cause a conflict. Can I disable the usb port within mac OS and have it only be seen by the Windows XP OS?

Below is the only other posting I've been able to find on the problem with this user's (munir) attempts at solving the problem. There were no replies to his querry:

START QUOTE: "When I go to the modem properties and try to "Query Modem" (under the Diagnostics tab) I get this error message:
"The port that the modem is attached to could not be opened. This may be the result of a hardware conflict. Check the device manager to verify all devices are functional."

I've tried disconnecting myself from the internet (and turning off airport) on the Mac side of things, I've tried disabling the LAN connection within Windows that connects to my Mac, nothing works.

The device manager seems to think all is well. It sees the device properly, it knows when I plug/unplug it.
COM3 is the port being used (for the modem), but I tried changing to various other ports, and nothing helped.

Oh, and I've read through what I can find on this forum, and this thread (http://forums.parallels.com/showthread.php?t=3200), while similar, isn't exactly the same - more like trying to get the Apple USB modem working in Windows.

I'd really love any ideas or suggestions!
(PS: To the Parallels team, I can't praise you enough - I've been working full time for the last month in Windows on my MacBook, and the integration has been seamless)" END OF QUOTE>

Any advice would be great as I'm bordering on buying an old PC just for my internet connection. what a shame that would be! LOL!

    Hello stevefisher,

Please tell, what port do you use and what's your modem model (I'd appreciate a link on the model, if possible).
For the moment I can just offer you to close all applications relied to internet connection on your Mac (like Firewall and so on) while dialing out with the modem from Windows XP.
Thank you for all the information.

    Best regards,
    Xenos

    Hi Xenos.

I've tried disabling all internet applications within mac and still no luck. It still seems that there's a conflict on the USB port.

The modem model is huawei ETS2056 http://www.huawei.com/mobileweb/en/products/view.do?id=328
I'm using the usb port on my macbook to connect.
In windows under device manager (after loading the drivers I see:
under Ports I see TIUMP usb serial port (COM4)
under multiport serial adapters I see TUSB3410
under modems I see Hauwei wireless modem (153.6k)

That's about all the info I can find.
I wish there was just a driver for this modem that worked on mac OS.
    Thanks for the help.
    steve
