When I try and open a word doc from my Windows VM using Word for Mac I get and error message telling me that I need to "reinstall Parallels Desktop". I am running build 5160 on a MacBook Pro (120gb/2gb) on 10.5.1. I only run Outlook on the Windows VM typically.

Can I re-install Parallels from the original installation download on top of the existing Parallels installation without affecting the existing configuration of Windows and Outlook, or do I need to start from scratch?

    Any advice is appreciated.

    Hello,

please try to uninstall Parallels Desktop in the following manner:
    a. Go to Finder - Applications - Utilities - Terminal.
    b. Type and run the following commands:
    • sudo rm /System/Library/Extensions/vmmain.kext
    • sudo rm /System/Library/Extensions/hypervisor.kext
    • sudo rm /System/Library/Extensions/Pvsvnic.kext
    • sudo rm /System/Library/Extensions/ConnectUSB.kext
    • sudo rm /System/Library/Extensions/Pvsnet.kext
    • sudo rm -rf /Library/Parallels/
    • sudo rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.parallels.*
Before you run these commands, please make sure that your VM .hdd and .pvs files are NOT stored in ~/Library/Parallels.
    c. Reboot your Mac and reinstall Parallels.
Then you can create a VM using your .hdd and .pvs files.

    Best regards,
    Stacey
