So I just installed Microsoft Office 2010 Professional on my Parallels Desktop. When I am downloading excel documents from Chrome for my classes, the files automatically open up in Numbers. (I don't even use numbers when I am running the Mac OS) What is even stranger to me is that when I try to change the preferences under which the file type xlsx is supposed to open, Excel 2010 is no where to be found. Yet, I can open Excel 2010 in Parallels. Any thoughts?
Try checking in the vm configuration options that share Windows applications with mac is checked.. this should put the windows apps into the associations listing then I think.
