Thanks to the good advice I received on this forum, I was able successfully to upgrade to Parallels 3. Now ... trying to get my Brother HL-5040 printer to work (for the first time ... never succeeded in 2.5 either): I successfully installed Bonjour for Windows, and it can find the Brother and assign a "generic" printer driver. However, pages come out pure black. I obviously need the Brother driver. Not having the original disk that came with printer ... I went the download route. I successfully downloaded the driver installer. When I run the installer, it installs the Brother driver. However, I don't know where... to get Bonjour to use that printer driver, I have to "point" to its location on the C drive. Where would that default location be? Thanks for any help.
Likely somewhere like /windows/system32/drivers on your HDD -- likely C: But it can vary with the version of Win you have. And if you know the name of the file you can use the Win search function to find it. Phil
Brother's printer installer can't see the printer on the Bonjour network actually, it turns out I didn't have the printer driver installed. However ... Brother's installer can't install the driver unless it can see the printer... and it's not set up to see a printer on a Bonjour network. Wonder if anyone else has any thoughts?
Brother makes CUPS drivers available, and CUPS is the printer system used by the Mac. You can access your CUPS web page at http://localhost:631/ Here's the Brother page: http://solutions.brother.com/linux/sol/printer/linux/cups_drivers.html If the drivers install in CUPS then that can be shared out and Bonjour will find it and identify the printer as a Brother HL-5040.
Solution! Apple's Bonjour Printer Setup Wizard did not have a driver for the Brother HL-5040. I tried installing the driver for the Brother H-6, and it now works!
