Hi: I'm trying Parallels Desktop 3.0 (5608) on my new 24" iMAC w/ Mac OS X 10.5.4 (running Win XP Pro SP3).

I'm having a problem with one application trying to access files on my Mac (files that have been shared to Windows):
although the folder with the files does indeed exist on my Mac (and can be seen in Windows explorer), I get the subject error message.

Trying VMware fusion, I do not get the error message and the program accesses the files just fine.
(The program is The Master Genealogist v7.03.)

Anyone have any ideas what the issue might be?
I prefer Parallels Desktop to Fusion for various reasons, including snapshot support, but this issue would be a deal breaker if I can't resolve it. (And I have only 4 days left in my trial!).

    Regards,
    Strathglass.

    Thanks John.

I tried removing then reinstalling Parallels Tools on the XP VM, and following the user guide procedure again for enabling shared folders.

Initially it gave me this Program Manager error window message (prior to reinstalling the Parallels tools, but after editing the VM config to properly enable shared folders):
"\\.PSF\.Home\Desktop is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this machine to find out if you have access permission. The network path was not found."
Again, this was before reinstalling the Parallels tools.

Then after reinstalling parallels tools on the VM, it made me log out/in again.
The result when logging back in was the same error message except the last sentence was replaced by:
"No network provider accepted the given path."

If I now try to double click now on the network folder in the VM called ".Home on .psf" (which worked before: I could see the Mac files), now I get a login prompt trying to connect to .psf, with grayed out login name of a string like "CHIS093FB\Guest" and the password field ready for me to fill in. Leaving it blank does not work, and my Mac account login does not work either.

    Any other ideas?

    Regards,
    Colin

Disconnect any network drives in My Computer,
Remove Parallels Shared Folders icon from Desktop and from C:\Program files\Parallels \Parallels Tools
    After that reinstall Parallels Tools,

Thanks again John. Here is an update:

-no network drives to disconnect (nothing mapped to a drive letter)
-no parallels shared folder icon shortcut on desktop
-removed parallels shared folder icon from Parallels Tools folder
    -removed then reinstalled parallels tools

    Now, still not working right:
-Home drive icon is mapped and works OK (Z: drive)
-Also Y: drive mapped to same location (I think as a result of the way I set up shared folders)
-Both appear to work from the Windows explorer, and I can access/edit a text file OK
-The TMG v7.03 application however still gives me an error indicating the folder path with the file I am trying to open is not found.

I then tried removing/reinstalling the TMG application, but it didn't help.

It seems things are working normally now for parallels: I can read and write Mac folder files from Parallels (i.e. the text file I tested).
So maybe this is some peculiarity with this particular application that is causing a problem.

Unless someone has some more specific ideas to try, I may have to give up being able to run The Master Genealogist (TMG) on Parallels, due to what appears to be a TMG issue.

    Regards,
    Strathglass

Thanks John. Turns out I had SMB sharing on, however only my account was set up for read/write access:
I changed it so that everyone has r/w access (not sure who an XP VM user appears to be)
However this did not help the problem.
However I didn't change the way I accessed the Mac files from the XP VM side: should I?
Sharing prefs. says windows users can access PC at SMB://192.... - however this didn't work for me:
when I put that into a PC explorer window, it just doesn't work.

Try ipconfig /all in Windows XP and ifconfig -a in Mac OS Terminal and put it here I will tell you how to access Mac from Windows from network

You can connect to mac using \\10.211.55.2 and use your Mac user name and password when password prompt appears

    Interesting thing John:
    that doesn't quite work:
-without any password I can see the Admin account public/shared folder
-my own account (which I am logged into): it doesn't show the correct contents.

My home dir was actually relocated to a separate external drive (no longer on internal drive's /Users folder).

This IP lets me see what I guess is maybe some vestige of when I had the home dir in the default location: it shows only a couple folders (inside the folder with my account name), and I don't need a p/w to see this.

I wonder if this is related to my other problems?

Any ideas on how to see the REAL contents of my REAL home directory on the Mac from the XP VM?

    Regards,
    Strathglass.

When you are using your account you can see content of /
Navigate to Users - your username and you will see your home folder
