I am trying to setup the VDI agent on ESXi 5 but running into some snags. I've read over the following guide: http://www.2x.com/docs/en/manuals/html/ ... -ESXi.html Here is my setup. VMWare ESXi 5 - IP: 192.168.2.10 Server 2008 R2 (2X Application Server) IP: 192.168.2.15 VMWare VDI Agent Appliance - IP: 192.168.2.16 Windows 7 Desktop - IP: 192.168.2.18 From the 2X Application Server, I am attempting to add the VDI Host to the farm. I've put in the 192.168.2.16 address for the VDI Agent address. The Status returns as "2X VDI Agent installed". When I hit the ADD button, I am getting the following: "VMWare ESX 5.0.0 (ESXi) was not found on VMWare ESX by VDI agent 192.168.2.16. Are you sure you want to continue?" What exactly is that error message and what does it mean? I am afraid I'll wipe all my VM's on my esxi host if I proceed further. Thanks.
the host agent should be just that. I do not see how it is going to wipe all current hosts in your setup. It might be a good idea to contact support directly though as they might provide better insight on this.
Hi there, this may be about a license issue. The trial of ESX/i runs for around 60 days without requiring a license and normally has all needed features enabled. If you happened to apply the free license it will continue to work but with e.g. the Storage APIs as well as the vSphere Command-Line Interface (vCLI) disabled, thus, not allowing some VDI products to manage virtual machines. In case of the 2X product we are talking about that vCLI is needed for the connection broker to work and in case of VDI-in-a-Box everything would be about the Storage APIs... If you are not sure which license you are using please do the following and let us know the exact type of license installed: 1. Logon using vSphere. 2. Go to the Configuration tab. 3. Select Licensed Features. 4. Take a look around and verify the exact version you are running. Two things to look for: -Type: Evaluation, Essentials, Standard, Enterprise, Enterprise Plus. -Features: Does it show a list of features that are enabled? Please list them down. If you e.g. see Evaluation then we have determined the free license has been applied and this is not supported. You have a few options if this is the case: start over with a fresh ESX evaluation, purchase a matching license or switch to another hypervisor that is supportet. For details please refer to http://www.2x.com/applicationserver/approved-vdi/. Kind Regards,
Will the VMWare ESXi 5 Essentials License work? I may be incorrect, but I didn't see anything about the ESXi server, requiring a license. It may be something to add into the 2X documentation for clarification. Thanks agian.
Hi, as far as I know this is really not written down in the english manual, but you can find this in the link I posted below (http://www.2x.com/applicationserver/approved-vdi/). If you look carefully you can recognize the *-mark in the line 'VMware ESXi* 5.0.0 Linux 32 / Windows 32 ESXi...' Below the listing of the Hypervisors there's the following note for this *: '* – The free version of ESXi does not have support for vCLI thus the connection broker will not work.' To follow up on your licensing question the answer is Yes. The essentials license will work. In detail VMware is stating the following regarding the vCLI in conjunction with the vSphere Hypervisors at the moment: 'vCLI , PowerCLI , and vSphere SDk for Perl are limited to read-only access for the free vSphere Hypervisor edition. To enable full functionality of vCLI on a VMware ESXi host, the host must be licensed with vSphere Essentials, vSphere Essential Plus, vSphere Standard, vSphere Advanced, vSphere Enterprise, or vSphere Enterprise Plus.' Kind Regards,
