Recently upgraded to Big Sur. Found that Hide Menubar Icons now takes 1-2 seconds to show the hidden icons. This locks up my system (spinning beach ball) while running. Same thing when hiding the icons again. I click away to trigger the automatic switch back, or click the icon directly, and the same thing happens.
1-2 seconds is not that bad, but jarring when I am trying to click around.
    Anyone else experiencing this issue?

I've opened a ticket for this as well and submitted tech data: #359294023

    Hello,
thank you for reporting the this issue. Yes, the speed of switching was decreased in Big Sur in comparison with previous version 10.15. It is a result of changes in system. As for hanging if click during switch - unfortunately there is no workaroung for it yet. The only way to avoid it is to wait until switching completion.

We still continue working on improving this tool.
