I am running Windows XP on Parallels in to test web sites running on an Apache server on the OS X 10.5 side, in Internet Explorer running in Windows. This is a very common use...nothing special going on here.
I want to use Host-Only networking, for speed and to prevent any possible intrusions through Windows.
After three days of trying, it suddenly works. I don't know why.... Hopefully, someone can write a definitive "How To".
1) OS X: System Preferences: Network: Parallels Host-Only Adapter: I set Configure to "Using DHCP"
You should see Status: Connected, and the IP Address is 10.37.129.2
2) In Parallels, choose Preferences: Network. Choose "Restore Defaults" if you changed it.
3) In Parallels: Start Menu: Run...: type "cmd"...
type "ipconfig/release" and return
type "ipconfig/renew" and return
type "ipconfig/all" and return
type "ping 10.37.129.2" and return
If you get "Reply form 10.37.129.2..." you are set to go.
You could probably skip step 3, and use the connection repair in the Windows Network Connections: Local Area Connection
: Support tab: Repair. Frankly, I'm not a Windows guy so I don't know.
I don't know what I did to make this all work, but it finally did. Obviously, since the setup above is 100% defaults, it should have worked from the beginning.
Also, it took ages to learn that the IP I needed to pay attention to was the 10.37.129.2. Sure, techies know this stuff, but they breath it...they have forgotten most of us learn by skimming "How To's" and don't care about the details.
Please, someone write this up properly and make it a FAQ!!!
---- UPDATE ----
OK, as the next entry says, the settings didn't stick.
---- UPDATE ----
Well, I have since restarted both the Mac and the Parallels VM. I'm using 100% default settings of Host-Only (set networking in both the Configure... AND Preferences). Right now, it works perfectly. I can see my web site from the Windows VM at http://http://10.37.129.2/~dgross (my user name on the Mac is 'dgross'). Yeah!
