Hello to the parallels forum ... :)

Firstly, how can I prevent newly created shortcuts to apps on my Windows 7 desktop also appearing on my Mac desktop?

Secondly, icons won't stay put on my windows desk top. I arrange them and then next time I fire up Windows they have moved. Some of them even disappear completely.

    Any suggestions much appreciated.

I'm running Windows 7 in Parallels 10 on a recently bought 13" MacBookPro.

    Hello AndrewJohn.

    Please do:

    1. When the virtual machine is in focus -> click Actions -> Configure -> Options Tab -> Sharing. Down to the "Shared Profile" there is a Configure... button. Click on it and UNCHECK "Desktop".
Relog to the virtual machine if prompts.

    2. regarding icons positions.
Please arrange the icons just how you want it. Then shut down the machine properly through Start menu -> Shut down.
After that please launch and check it.

please note: when your virtual machine is running in Window mode and you change the borders of its window - icons will be change their position as they adapting while you drag the border.
So for example you may test the issue in Fullscreen mode.

Thanks, Eugene. That did the trick, both your instructions.

Regarding icon position, I have always had this problem from time to time on all Windows machines I've used. Most people don't notice I guess because they don't arrange their icons on the Windows desk top. But some people have been whinging about this silly business for years. I'm surprised MS haven't developed a simple little save routine for desktops so that arrangements can be quickly recovered.
