I have a Japanese copy of windows xp SP1

    I doubt there would be any trouble, but in any case, even if you do not have the Parallels Desktop yet, you can try a trial version (get trial key): http://www.parallels.com/download/desktop/

    I would also suggest to create a virtual machine using Custom Installation mode.
