    Hi,

I have a Mac, and use Parallels to run Windows XP. I have wireless internet, and am currently using 'Shared Networking' to get internet with Windows. The internet appears to only go to certain sites. In paticular I've noticed that sites that have a url beginning with a 'www.', seem to work just fine; however sites that simply have the 'http://' have trouble for the most part. For example, I can go to 'www.gmail.com' just fine- i can even enter my password and go to 'http://mail.google.com/mail/?shva=1#inbox' , but trying to go to 'http://axess.stanford.edu' or ' http://reviews.cookingcache.com/henckels-knives-review.html ' I get a 'Server not found' error page when using both Firefox and IE. What in the world is going on here?

When I originally installed Parallels, the internet worked just fine. Then I moved, and it's never worked since. I've tried it on multiple different wireless networks. Please help.

    Thanks

Can you open the same sites on your Mac side successfully?

Please, check your Mac Firewall settings.
Open Mac OS X System Preferences -> Sharing -> Firewall section. Enable access to services depending of what kind of networking you want to be available in Virtual Machine. You should enable "Personal Web Sharing" at least to be able to browse web sites.

So, I enabled 'Personal Web Sharing', but it still seems to be having the issue of only working with certain sites.

M.... it can be also an issue with some virus. I have often seen the similar problem on normal hardware Windows PCs.

I have used the HijackThis to repair it, but this tool is relatively complex...

To check whether it is really the virus (spyware), please click Start -> Run and type "cmd.exe"
Then please type in the appeared window the command "ping axess.stanford.edu".

If you will see the same text as quoted below, but still cann't access the Web-page, then it is definetely a spyware

So, i don't get the text you showed above. Instead it says, "Ping request could not find host axess.stanford.edu. Please check the name and try again"

May be an issue with Parallels Networking when host has more then one DNS Server.

could you please post here the output of the command on Mac OS X side "less /etc/resolv.conf" ?

To to it, please run "Applications"->"Utilities"->"Terminal" and type in it "less /etc/resolv.conf" (without quotes)

Typing the above into a Mac terminal resulted in lots of white space followed by the text below:

    domain hsd1.wa.comcast.net.
    nameserver 68.87.69.146
    nameserver 68.87.85.98
    nameserver 68.87.78.130
    (END)

Hm... I've just noticed interesting facts (thanks John for requesting this info!):
    1) You don't have the Parallels Tools installed (Since Realtek RTL8029 is only used when no tools installed)

    2) For some reason the DHCP-server and DNS server are invalid. They should be 10.211.55.1 for Shared Networking.
To resolve this, please turn off the VM, go to the menu "Parallels Desktop" -> Preferences -> Networking and press the "Restore Defaults" button. You may also need to remove the DNS-server settings from the Windows Network preferences

Under "Parallels Desktop" -> Preferences -> Network, I don't have a "Restore Defaults" button. There are only two boxes to click 'Enable DHCP scope for host-only networking' and 'Enable DHCP scope for shared newtorking'. Currently the box for shared networking is clicked and below reads

    Start: 10.211.55.1
    End:10.211.55.254
    Mask:255.255.255.0

Perhaps the reason the 'Restore Defaults' button isn't there is because I am running Parallels Build 3214 (I know Parallels 4.0 was released, but I didn't want to purchase the software again...).

I clicked 'Install Parallels Tools' under 'Actions' on the VM toolbar and after installing and restarting my windows showed the following error, "The system has recovered from a serious error." The internet is still not working properly, and I can still click on 'Install Parallels Tools'. I've tried installing Parallels tools and had the same issue. Checking the ipconfig/all again- the following items have changed:

    DHCP Server...:10.211.55.1
    Lease obtained .....Wednesday December 24,2008
    Lease Expires....Wednesday December 31,2008

Unfortunately I cann't help with installing PD30 tools (may be you should create a support ticket for this issue?)

But for DNS, you may try remove the DNS-server settings from the Windows Network preferences. Please open "Network Connections", right-click on Network Adapter, Properties, "Internet Protocl TCP/IP" -> Properties and make sure that "Obtain DNS server address automatically" is enabled.

If it is not, enable it and reboot the VM
