Just got a brand new Mac Pro 2.66GHz Quad/3GB RAM. Installed build 5608 of Parallels 3.0. Installation goes without a hitch. I can delete and create new virtual machines with no problem. HOWEVER, when I try to install XP Pro SP1, Ubuntu 8.10 or FreeBSD 6.2, in all instances, I get a kernel panic (all input freezes and grey curtain of sadness comes down). All installation attempts are from CD but that has never been a problem before.
PanicReport shows the following:
[snip]
Backtrace terminated-invalid frame pointer 0x13
Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependencies):
com.parallels.kext.vmmain(3.0)@0xa2b000->0xa3afff
[snip]
I've deleted and re-installed Parallels multiple times, including performing the following:
sudo rm /System/Library/Extensions/vmmain.kext
sudo rm /System/Library/Extensions/hypervisor.kext
sudo rm /System/Library/Extensions/Pvsvnic.kext
sudo rm /System/Library/Extensions/ConnectUSB.kext
sudo rm /System/Library/Extensions/Pvsnet.kext
sudo rm -rf /Library/Parallels/
sudo rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.parallels.*
I have the exact same build of Parallels running flawlessly on several Macbook Pros. I specifically got the Mac Pro to run Parallels, so needless to say this is a shock and disappointing. Why won't it run on the Mac Pro?
UPDATE: After extensive research, I've discovered that Parallels 3 for Desktop DOES NOT support multiple CPUs or at the very least Quad cores. I've upgraded to Parallels 4 and everything works great.
