    Is there any hope for resurrecting my file? Here's what happened:

    1. I have an external harddisk (which I use with both native Win XP and with Parallels Win XP hosted on a Mac).
    2. Normally everything works fine when editing in MS Word on Parallels. I power up the Mac. I start Parallels. I plug in the ext. drive. I run MS Word, or whatever, and have no apparent problems.
    2.a. However, this time I accidentally plugged in the ext. drive BEFORE starting Parallels.
    3. It appeared to be operating fine. I ran MS Word. It could see the ext. drive. It could open the file. The contents were correct. I edited. I saved. I shut down.
    4. Now, the file is corrupted. It will not open under either Parallels or under native Win XP. The size of the file is approximately correct (200KB), but the contents of the file (viewed under WordPad) are apparent garbage. Viewable text is unrelated to anything I have done, e.g.:

    endstream
    endobj
    53 0 obj
    << /Length 809 >>
    stream
    <?xpacket begin='' id='W5M0MpCehiHzreSzNTczkc9d' bytes='808'?><rdf:RDF xmlns:rdf='http://www.w3.org/1999/02/22-rdf-syntax-ns#' xmlns:iX='http://ns.adobe.com/iX/1.0/'><rdf:Description about='' xmlns='http://ns.adobe.com/pdf/1.3/' xmlns:pdf='http://ns.adobe.com/pdf/1.3/' pdf:Author='Hitomi Iwabuchi' pdf:Creator='Adobe Illustrator(R) X' pdf:Title='IP069fig11.eps'/>

    I thought I'd ask for any pointers here, just in case someone can explain what went wrong & how to avoid it in the future. Plus, in the off-chance that the explanation yields a way to resurrect the file.
    (BTW, yes, I do have a backup copy. However, reverting to the backup means I lost all of yesterday's work.)

    Any pointers appreciated.

    Thanks,
    CJ
